Oops, I Did it Again (more unplayed games ...)

Well, it wasn't as bad as last year, but I've wound up with a fair amount of unplayed games again. I can't find if I wrote anything about it, but it was either this year or the year before I was sitting on 25+ unplayed games in my closet after all these crazy seasonal discount deals. I eventually got that number down to 0, and if I had been blogging about it it certainly would have been worth the read. I found some great sleepers in there that remain favorites today (Vikings, Space Dealer, Dragon's Gold, China) and some that reside somewhere in my 'Previously Owned' list. All in all, I had a GREAT time exploring new titles with an open mind and I don't regret those days at all.

I've tried to take care since then and not build up a big reservoir, but like I said above, oops! Here's the list of titles that I have yet to get to the table. They've been gathering for a time, now. I welcome your comments on them!

Shogun
Stronghold
Offrandes
Magnum Sal
Leonardo da Vinci
Master Builder
Dark Minions
Antler Island
Cambria
Genesis

Now, getting these babies to the table isn't going to be easy. Couple reasons for that:

1) "Group Taste" -- Not to sound high and mighty, but I feel like I have the ability to enjoy almost every type of game out there. I certainly swing one way more than the other, but there's still a shot I'll like something I initially thought I might not, and I'll most likely give it a try. Most of my groups, though, are in a particular category. I have an Ameritrash group that I adore, but forcing Leonardo Da Vinci on them wouldn't be nice. I have a Euro group that I love, but dice games like Dark Minions would be avoided like the plague. There's tons of little groups in there, most of them casual gamers that could go either way. One group is certainly a try-all kind of group, but I just don't see them enough to barge in with new games to explain, especially when they're more comfortable playing games they already know. And these aren't all "freebies" that I can knock off at home with the family.

2) Rule Reading -- perhaps this is my biggest stumbling block to getting these games played. Oh man, have I pulled a 180 since I got into the hobby. I used to take rulebooks with me in the car if I knew I would be stuck somewhere. I used to read the PDFs late-night before bed. No longer. If I'm going to learn a game these days, I need to set the whole thing up on the table, get out the rules, and go piece-by-piece through it to understand it fully. Sometimes I just don't have the motivation to do this. My son sometimes has the patience to sit with me while I do this, but some of these games won't be up his alley. So that's when I start looking for explainers! I have some Stronghold veterans in place, which is AWESOME knowing about that particular game's rules, and I have a winner for Shogun also. The rest are on me.

3) Pushing the Play -- and the last, and most dire in my mind, is this one. Except for the most confident/forward of us, pushing new games on people isn't the most fun activity to engage in. I don't think that the hobby has reached a point of saturation (yet), but sometimes these lesser-hyped games don't appeal to strongly to the common gamer. So many folks are afraid of trying out something new because they won't enjoy it. And with three kids, I don't see these people as often as I'd like -- even I feel the pressure of not spending time on a new game that might not be as enjoyable as something else we both know!

So that's where I am and what needs to get done. It really does feel like a mission -- GET THOSE UNPLAYED GAMES PLAYED. Now I just need the victims ... er, players.

redtraingreentrainbluetrainyellowtrainblacktrainpurpletrain

FOR DISCUSSION: Those of you that have an inkling of my taste, any guesses how the above-mentioned unplayed games will be perceived? And any other sob stories about getting unplayed games to the table?

Stronghold is a blast. I think it would fit into your euro or ameritrash groups. The euro lovers would like the cubes and the multiple strategical options to victory. The ameritrash crowd will love the theme and the opportunity to squash the defenders or repeal the onslaught of raiding evil.

It's hard not to think of LotR while playing this game. You owe it too yourself to get it to the table.

You know I'm always down for a new game of whatever... YOU'VE helped me swing both ways and I even know the first game off that list (although it's a little too long for our next game night). Please feel free to push our group any time.

You have 2 polish titles on your list (Stronghold and Magnum Sal). Why you don't play polish games?

And what group do I fall in???

Wish I could help you with your choices, Rick. I fell I know the games you like, but other that Stronghold and Master Builder, I have no idea what the other games are about let alone how they play. Sad, huh?

I'll vote for the two I know, especially since Master Builder was once on my radar. I'd still love to give it a go.

My friends will play most of my games but REALLY lean towards Ameritrash. I am way more euro minded so that kind of sucks, but everyone get's their way every other game night. That being said, I brought out Shogun(zomg, it has a map and troops) and they really liked it. To me it actually was more euroy(you do build theaters afterall) than even I wanted in a game called Shogun, but a pretty fun game. Give it a go. Your euro friends will like it because that is mostly what it is(don't believe the hybrid talk) and your ameritrashers will like it because even though you don't get molds, you do get a pretty map and a freaking battle tower...just don't bump it.

Oh yes, I plan on playing all of them sooner or later! Mikey, I'd say your group is the most accomodating of all, so thank you. And yes, you were the Shogun teacher I spoke of. I must play it soon! The tower calls to me!

Glad to hear so much talk on Stronghold. It looks incredible, and can't wait to play. The teachers I spoke of told me it's best with three players, which sounds intriguing and a lot easier to get to the table than with two.

Kearn -- Just finished up Two Towers on Netflix last night, itching to play Stronghold even more now.

I've played Leonardo DaVinci quite a few times and I enjoy it. IT was my favorite new game of 2006 for a while (until I played Imperial). It is similar in style to Princes of Florence, but with the added element of worker placement. It is definitely a Euro, and a heavy one at that. One mistake at the end can be costly.

While i am obviously biased, I would point out that Cambria has the shortest and simplest set of rules of any of the games you mention, and would demand less time and effort to get on the table. It is also a short game, 20 min, so even if your friends are wary of trying something new, point out that they can always play Ticket to ride for the umpteenth time afterward. Probably best with your euro group.

Eric -- I had a rule question over in the forums that I'm afraid you confused with another one of your games. Please go see! And yes, I agree, I think Cambria will be a hit.

Dom - my main fear of Leo is that it appears to be a VERY bland, dry euro. Such titles do not last on my shelves long. That you compared it to Princes of Florence makes me cower a bit in fear.

Yowza! You are correct. Please see new answer there. I went straight to your question from my subscription alert, and the question sounded like it was about Hibernia rather than Cambria. I guess this is a good reason not to release two games in the same month!

We played Shogun for the first time in about two years with our group last night. It was a blast. However:

- it took nearly 3.5 hours, including the rules explanation.
- we have a "take that" kind of group, so it was a good choice.

I have a hard time getting Shogun to the table, but that's not because people don't love it. It's because we never seem to have that kind of time anymore.

I've just played (and introduced to my opponent; it was a 2-players game) Magnum Sal last night! It's good to be back playing that game again.

Hmm, probably the contest that the designers are running for Magnum Sal expansion (planned to be released in Spiel'2012) will get you going? You still have time till January.

Here's the BGG page. Magnum Sal expansion and design contest!

If you go for Genesis let me know. I have a PDF of a small card expansion (2*9 cards) that makes it better.

If we ever reprint it (with a graphically better board) we will include these cards too. And they will come up on BGG sooner or later anyway.

This just drew my attention, because you've got several of these titles in the math trade.
I just wanted to say that if you want to learn Shogun, I'm sure either the designer, Dirk Henn, or myself would be happy to teach you at the upcoming game con in a couple of weeks.

Definitely keep it.

We just got it to the table this past Monday (first time for me since Gamex 2011) and it was new to 3 of the 5 players, but everyone loved it! I recommend learning it first, then inviting people over specifically to play that game, knowing that they are going to be in it for 3 hours. (Although it does go much faster when everyone knows how to play already.) Then it's not about a particular group's taste. Throw some meat on the grill and they won't be able to resist an evening of simultaneous turn-taking and direct conflict, euro-style!

P.S.> Margie loves it too! (She told me to tell you.)

Shogun is a great game and I will agree it takes a long time to play the first time through. It was so long between playing it that the next time was the same way. It sat lonely on my shelf for quite awhile and I ended up trading it. It miss it but I have limited space (and the box is a big'un). There is a 2 player variant with limited land area and it kinda sorta had the same feeling but it definitely needs more players.

Hey Danny and Jason,

I DID get to play Shogun a few weeks ago! I found a friend nice enough to teach it at the SoCal Gamesday and we had a terrific five-player game. I think it lasted about 2 1/2 hours and it was a ball of fun, the time just flew by. I really enjoyed how it takes the simultaneous turn-taking mechanic that I don't always care for and combined it with war on a map. The cube tower is just over the top and a great addition. I won't be getting rid of it any time soon, and you better believe I will be having Dirk sign it at Strategicon!

Danny, if I get a chance to pull it out I will definitely invite you to play! I would love to play again soon so I remember the rules well enough, although honestly it's not that difficult to learn.

Say hello to Margie for me! I hope she can make it -- how is the little one?

Glad yours made it to the table. I enjoyed your thoughts shared, Rick. (And what a great idea to get Dirk to sign my copy! I'm bringing it for sure!)

You've gotta download & print my setup cards. It will shorten the pre-game and get you playing more quickly--a pretty vital move if you are like me and are trying to teach it to others in order to get it to the table.

And since you asked, the little one is here (2/12) and beautiful. Margie had a tough go of it, but she is doing great & learning fast. Neither of them will be able to come to the Con, but her best friend is staying with us for the week which will free me up a bit to do my part as a GM. I'm really looking forward to it, as I have several new gamers coming for the first time.

Congratulations and welcome to fatherhood! It's a fun ride.

I checked out your setup cards and they seem awesome, although I don't remember enough about the setup from my one play. I seem to remember picking out my choice of territories and your cards seem to be predetermined locations and number of armies. Is this a variant I am not aware of? Thanks so much!

Not a variant per se, but rather the cards are based on the predetermined starting setup (for new players) prescribed in the rules. Many people play this way, even when they aren't new. Oh, and the number of armies corresponds to the back of your individual player mats.

However, if you guys did the drafting setup, which is also in the rules, you may not have used the back of your mat--I'm not sure of how you decided how many armies went where. There are arguments that the drafting is longer or more difficult for beginners, but who is to say?
