Looking Back at Chariots of Fire

My journey through Chariots of Fire is the beginning of a long journey. Nine battles officially down, who knows how many more to go.

It's been an interesting ride so far. I was a bit concerned that there wouldn't be enough differentiation because of a dearth of solid information covering these battles. In the end, I think that lack may have helped instead. I think it allowed some extra leeway in the design.

As is "standard" in ancients warfare many of the battles are set piece affairs over open ground. Still the varying combinations of two and three man chariots, and presence or absence of runner infantry to go with them ensured that each of the chariot based battles had a distinct feel.

I'm a bit disappointed in the first two scenarios. I think that either one of the pair would have been sufficient and allowed for another actual chariot fight. TO me they seemed like learning scenarios and there were not enough new concepts introduced to justify doubling up. The pre-publication list of scenarios had a few that didn't seem to make it, so maybe one of those could have replaced one of the first two.

Troy was also an outlier, but an interesting enough diversion. SO I'm glad it was included. I'm not sure where it would have been a better fit, so Chariots it is.

All in all it's been enjoyable so far. War Galley and War Galley - Salamis are up next. As are some scenarios from Tyrant: Battles of Carthage versus Syracuse. Some of the Tyrant ones have already been played, so they'll get entries here, but it was a while ago so I'm not sure how much new I'll be adding to them.

I've got some additional lighting to install, so hopefully pictures will become a more feasible option in the near future. It's the biggest request I get., and rest assured I'm working on it. So, other than pictures, what else do you want to see?

Thanks for the synopsis. CoF is staring at me from my dining room table as I write this. Sadly, I am in a bit of a rule reading funk right now, so it will have to wait. Plus I am getting distracted by other games, life and this whole Christmas holiday thing. Perhaps I will be able to take it up early in the new year.

Your session reports have been very enjoyable and I hope that you can get some entertainment out of tackling War Galley. Another of my unplayed games (there's a shock ..... not). I hear it influenced Flying Colors quite a bit, so it would be interesting to play it for comparison purposes alone.

I have FC, and have played just a little bit of it so far. Well, technically I've played some Serpents of the Seas. I do really enjoy that one, and so far war galley (I'm actually a game and a half in as I get the blog caught up) has been quite fun so far. Lopsided, but fun.

Well, my rule reading went nicely. I have been struggling through rulebooks for a number of months now, so being able to tackle these in a few days made me feel pretty good.

One thing that caught my eye was the disappearance of the player determined Momentum attempts found in earlier titles. Now it has been subsumed into the chit pull mechanism (another new feature I believe).

I think I see what you were saying (in a previous thread) about the runner infantry. There are some intriguing tactical possibilities there. They are difficult for me to visualize though, so pushing cardboard is the only way to work through them. That is ideal as far as I am concerned.

Punching out the units from the first scenario, Sumer. I was not sure if I was going to bother with the Heroic Leaders just to keep things simple, but the rules for it are not too onerous.

Yep. And that chit pull was the cause of several traffic jams when the rear line activated before the front.

Then you're one up on me, I thought they seemed like an overly complicated system instead of just making a new unit type or something using only one counter. But being able to split them up at times is really key to making them interesting.

If you've played GBoH before, you already know how to work the combat tables, there's not a lot interesting activation-wise in that scenario, so you may as well include the Heroic Leaders. If you've never played GBoH before then maybe you've got enough figuring out how to work the GBoH shock combat system. This latter viewpoint doesn't apply to you personally
