December 2011 Gaming Challenge -- Day 19 -- The family splits . . . but the Challenge lives on!

The children are out for Christmas vacation, and this proved to be our first real hurdle to the December Challenge. Because both Melissa and I were working, the children are spending a few days with their cousin in Greenville. Because it is about 40 minutes to her house, the Challenge was in danger of ending prematurely. We talked about it and agreed that if both the kids played a game and Melissa and I played a game then the Challenge would continue.

The children picked their game and chose Race 3000.

My son called this evening to give me a report of the game. It went something like this: "Hi Dad. My sister and I played our challenge game." "What happened?" "She led a while, then I led a while then she won. I'm sort of busy so talk to you later."

Daughter: "Hi Dad" "Did you win?" "Yes. Love you see you later."

Final: Daughter first, Son second.

Melissa and I decide to play Lost Cities.

Lost Cities
is still an excellent couples game and a nice introduction to Euros in general. My wife and I don't play this game that much anymore but I still enjoy it. This is a game I rate an 8 and this is our 15th recorded play on BGG. (Actual plays is probably near 100)

This was an unusual game for us in that all 3 rounds were low scoring. The first round saw Melissa take a 40-21 lead. I bounced back in the second round to take a 70-63 lead overall.

The final round saw both of us get a bit aggressive, which led to negative expeditions for both of us. When the smoke cleared, I had managed to get 15 more points for a total of 85. We counted up Melissa's score and she managed only 14.

Final Scores: Larry 85, Melissa 77.

A bit unorthodox but the spirit of the Challenge was met so we continue onward.

Probably not, but our son took his own game to her house. She does have one of the Sorry! card games, but I can't remember which one. But the point becomes moot because I have to go get them for basketball practice tonight, and our daughter has to practice on Wednesday night for a song she's singing in church Christmas Eve. So the challenge will live on in its original form for the rest of the week as I blow the gas budget driving back and forth. They will be back home to stay on Thursday night. I would take vacation and keep them at home, but I would rather save it for, well, you know, beach trips and such.

Dad gets pushed aside for other activities. Of course, I think they were making sugar cookies so I don't blame him.
