New Game Round-up: Mage Knight Sells Out, Freeze Again & A First Peek at 7 Wonders: Cities

• WizKids reports that Vlaada Chvátil's Mage Knight has sold out at the publisher level, which means that copies might be available at distributors and stores, but once those supplies run out, no more copies are available – at least not for now. WizKids does note that "[d]ue to this overwhelming response, a second production run of the game is assured. We are also excited to announce plans to release the game in German, Czech and other languages as details are finalized."

• Designer Filip Miłuński says that an expansion is in the works for the 2010 release Magnum Sal with an intended release date of Spiel 2012. Miłuński and publisher Gry Leonardo are soliciting ideas for new tool cards in a contest on the publisher's website with a submission deadline of January 15, 2012.

Andrea Meyer at BeWitched Spiele reports that the 2010 release Freeze - from Meyer and co-designer Hans-Peter Stoll – will be released in 2012 by Ravensburger under the name Bühne frei (something like "Open Stage").

In other news from BeWitched Spiele, the first print run of Frigiti is nearly sold out, with a second printing in the works. Meyer also notes that she's working on an expansion for Frigiti and a variant for her much loved Hossa.

• In his Spiel 2011 report, designer Michael Schacht mentions three titles that he showed at the convention that should be ready for public display at the 2012 Nürnberg trade show: a Zooloretto dice game, Expedition Africa and Mondo Sapiens, a Mondo spin-off game of which first images of which are available on Schacht's website. Note that all of the game names are working titles and not final.

• No, it's not a game, but gamers might still be interested in Realm Coins (Kickstarter link) by Michelle and Matthew Kloth. The pair are using the Kickstarter project to raise funds to mint coins – yes, out of real metal – with a gold, silver or copper finish. Says Kloth in a note to me about the project, "BoardGameGeek made up 50% of our contributions. Boardgamers seem to really love the idea of upgrading their games with metal 'gold', silver', and 'copper' coins." The KS project, fully funded after only 48 hours, runs until January 16, 2012.

• A few details have come out about 7 Wonders: Cities, the next expansion for Antoine Bauza's best-selling, world-conquering, award-dominating design, namely that it includes "optional team rules, a new type of card (black, representing the remains of cities), and new cards of old types (two new wonders, new guild and leader cards associated with black cards)", to quote from the game description here on BGG. (A description I edited earlier today, so like some pompous jackanape I'm effectively quoting myself. Sheesh.)

In any case, Thomas Provoost at Repos Production passed along artwork-in-progress for some of the cards. I've included two below, and four others are posted on the game page.

Preliminary artwork for "Brotherhood of Thieves" and what I've translated as "Dive" (originally "Tripot")

I don't suppose Michael Schacht's "Expedition Africa" could be a hard copy version of the browser/app dice game by the History Channel of the same name, eh? I love that game, but I'm not sure it's really Michael Schacht's style (of course, for all I know, he may have been hired to design that game to begin with). In any case, I typically like his games, so I'm interested to see what that turns out to be.

Normally I'd give a thumb for such a funny remark, but I think she needs it more!

If you had been to this dive, you would know she is holding a knife behind her back. The question is: is she going to use it to steal the gold or stab the jerk who didn't put a coaster under the pitcher?

Glad to hear that Freeze will be getting more exposure.

And I really enjoyed the prototype for the new version of Hossa, which improves on the original core game IMO.

Mage Knight is a fantatic game: Vlaada + WizKids is an explosive mixture ... I'm writing a detailed review that will be soon on Opinionated Gamers web site!

I really hope Vlaada and WizKids are working on some expansions/scenarios but what is already in the box is enough for endless hours of gaming!

good play

I hope the new 7 wonders expansion carries a better price/components relation. I still feel like ripped off for paying 20 Euro ($25) for a deck of cards some cardboard token and a new wonder.

I am so glad that Mage Knight is apparently selling well. This game deserves every bit of success. For me it is the best game of 2011, and surely one of the best games of the last ten years.

I didn't think the 7 Wonders Leaders expansion was very good. Doesn't add much to the game, we have gone back to playing without it.

Hopefully, the new Cities expansion will be something we like better.
