• Among its other releases in early 2012 – Kairo, Edo, a new version of Wallenstein – German publisher Queen Games is releasing Kingdom Builder: Nomads, which includes four new game boards and consequently four new powers associated with their respective game boards, such as the ability to place an additional settlement adjacent to a mountain space or the power to remove stone from a quarry. Additional Kingdom Builder scoring cards are also included.

Queen Games is also releasing a trio of older card games in one package, suitably titled 3 in 1: Mückenstich, Danger, Zwickern.

• Steve Jackson Games notes that it it reprinting Illuminati: Deluxe Edition, Illuminati: Y2K, and Illuminati: Bavarian Fire Drill in 2012, with all of them expected to reach stores in Q3.

• German publisher Kosmos released Die Siedler von Catan: Junior in 2007 and many other publishers followed suit shortly with versions in their own languages, but U.S. publisher Mayfair Games likes to do things differently with its line of Catan games, employing its own artists and graphic designers to recreate a game to match its perception of what's needed in the U.S. marketplace. Thus, Mayfair has just now announced its version of Catan: Junior, with that game due out in April 2012.

The theme of Catan: Junior remains the same as in the German version, with players now being pirates who need to build additional pirate warehouses in order to win the game. Existing warehouses provide resources (wood, wool, rum, sabers, gold) based on the roll of a die, and players need to construct ships in order to reach new locations in which to build warehouses. (I'm baffled as to why pirates remain universally appealing as a theme given the persistent news reports of what pirates do in the real world – but kids are always shooting each other with lasers and hand pistols anyway, so maybe I should stop being an old fart and worry about other things.)

• Designer Christophe Boelinger has posted an update on the status of expansions for Dungeon Twister, with a look at one of the two game boards in the first blister pack of Dungeon Twister: Traps:

In DT Newsletter #3 (PDF) Boeligner notes that while expansions have been delayed somewhat given that DT: Prison appeared in 2009, once they start to appear, one new blister pack should be released every 3-4 months as all of them will be produced at the same time. Each blister pack includes two new game boards, four characters (two for each side), new items, and the various tokens required to make the new stuff work – and collectively all four blister packs comprise Dungeon Twister: Traps. (Hmm, how to enter this in the BGG database effectively?)

As for what this board does, Boelinger says, "New elements stand out quite clearly... You will have to imagine the effects." Boeligner doesn't have a release date yet for DT: Traps as the art is still in progress and the miniatures can't be made until the character design is complete.

• Looney Labs has announced its ninth version of the ever-changing, ever-propagating card game Fluxx for release on March 23, 2012: Oz Fluxx. Yes, now players will walk to the Emerald City, fighting off flying monkeys, experiencing the poppies, and otherwise doing all things Ozzy in a Fluxxian way.

Hmm, Ozzy Fluxx, the ever-changing heavy metal card game. Yes, I can see that being released in a few years...

• Wakefield Carter at Cambridge Games Factory says that the new game Pala, along with a reprint of Barons, is on its way to the U.S. and should be available in stores in February 2012. News about the sweet black box edition of Glory to Rome and other CGF releases should be coming soon.

ASL ... yes, this is my Desert Island Game. If I have to give up all my 3000+ games and only allowed to keep one, this would be it. This bloody game stood the test of time. Around for more than 25 years - simply the best.

The easy way to enter Dungeon Twister: Traps is how it was done for the Heroscape expansions. Heroscape Expansion Set: Malliddon's Prophecy , for example. There are four blisters in the expansion.

The difference is that the Heroscape expansions were all release simultaneously - the Dungeon Twister: Traps blisters will be staggered.

Thanks for the suggestion, Eric! I had figured that I'd use different versions so that everything would be on the same page. Even with a quarterly release schedule, that seems the best approach. Once the release date nears, I'll figure out whether I need to tweak the name or version title.

Glad to see them putting out expansions for Kingdom Builder fast and hopefully often, but I wonder what the price point will be.

Great game but I hope they don't overprice themselves out of the fans wallets. Too fast and too $$$ then it looks like money grab and will turn people away.

I doubt it will get as many expansions as Dominion. Hopefully these four new boards come in around $20. I don't know that I'd pay much more than that for them.

I misread part of the title as "Traps for Kingdom Builder." I was envisioning forcing your opponent to place on a trapped space to blow up his settlement or something.

I don't know the final retail price, but it's likely to be higher as the game also includes components (red houses!) for a fifth player, something I just discovered this morning thanks to this components image newly available from Queen Games.

Lots to guess at on what some of these tiles mean since they show three houses being placed on a location instead of only one. Once I've seen the rules, I'll post more about what's in the box and how it changes the game.

It's a little disappointing to hear about a kingdom builder expansion when I'm still trying to get queen games to send me replacement parts for the original game. Maybe they've been busy with the expansion and that's why they can't get back to me :-)

Which email did you use? I sent an email to the address listed as Sales / Customer Service on 18th Dec asking for them to send me some replacement settlements that were missing from my copy. I haven't had a response yet, so have just sent another email to a wider set of email addresses.

It'd be great if the FFG LCG boosters could be grouped this way as well.

I agree in principle. Right now you might now that a particular cycle contains six boosters, but unless you know the names, you'd have to click through lots of listings.

As I've mentioned before, the BGG admins have kicked around ideas for how to group things like promos and Magic: The Gathering expansions and other things so that everything is grouped and findable, without being overwhelming. We're still trying to piece together what will work best...

I was able to get in contact with someone, and was told I'd get replacements sent out in a couple of days, and that they'd take a couple of weeks to get here. That was back in early November. End of December comes and no replacements yet, so I reply back to confirm whether the replacements had been shipped out or not yet, and was told the office was closed for the holidays and they would get back to me in a couple of days. Sent a followup last week, and haven't heard anything since.

A new trend: leave the 5th player pieces out of the main game and sell them 2 months later as an expansion and at almost the same price as the original.

Unfortunately this is true but it's not necessarily a new trend...been around for a few years. I am sure this was the plan. As quick as the game is, I'd buy a few sets and put six boards together for a big game. Or even just play on four boards for a tighter game. Kingdom Builder will be a big money maker for Queen.

I am so glad to hear that they are including those as I found it so difficult to play with a few that they included in the base game.

I'm glad for the new kingdom builder boards as had a suprising amount of play at home. However I hope it doesn't turn into another Dominion with endless expansions. I stopped Dominion at Prosperity but my compulsive side wants the full set which won't get used enough.

I know it's been touched on by more than one above me already, but ... wow, an expansion for Kingdom Builder already, huh? Seriously, that's been out for what, 3 months, if even that? It does seem like the things they've included are valuable, but it makes this all the more silly as it's something that (granted, in my opinion) should have been included in the base game, ESPECIALLY if it's coming out within a quarter of a year of the game's initial launch ...

If nothing else, I'm glad I really wasn't ever interested in Kingdom Builder. Interesting to see mixed reactions though. I can't imagine anyone has played the game enough to say, "Yes, an expansion, that's exactly what we needed!" whistle
