December 22nd (last Working Lunch for the year):
With this the last working day before Christmas, we had arranged to take a half day and play a game or three. At least, I was expecting a longer game but it turned out that Rick was short of time. So we opted for RftG, with just the Gathering Storm cards and no goals. Rick and I know the game well enough (Rick) and very well (me) but Mike was effectively relearning - though a perfect lunch game in experienced hands, we had not made it that far, so it had been a while.
Rick was Alpha Centauri and set immediately on a military course. Mike was Doomed World, working through his options. He built steadily and produced well. I was Separatist Colony and had a mixed approach, with some consuming, some building. With Galactic Federation I was able to build up well and consumed a couple of times for decent points. But Rick put down Alien Tech Institute and New Galactic Order and I thought I was done. Terraforming Guild was just enough to get me over the line in first.
Rick: 23 + 0VP + 6 (NGO) + 15 (ATI) = 44
Mike: 12 + 15VP = 27
Me: 22 + 11VP + 7 (GalFed) + 8 (Terra Gld) = 48
Rick had to go but Mike stayed for a rematch, 2 player, again no goal and TGS only. We also didn't play the experienced vesion.
Mike got Earth's Lost Colony and built an impressive production engine. He capped off with Galactic Renaissance and SETI as well. I was New Sparta and built heavily military with Trade League out early to blunt the effect of his expected consuming. But the tempo of my game was a little off and though I got both New Economy and Galactic Genome Project out as well, those were not enough to overcome Mike's VP count.
Mike: 17 + 18VP + 6 (GalRen) + 9 (SETI) = 50
Me: 17 + 3VP + 6 (Trade League) + 9 (New Ec) + 4 (GGP) = 39
It was quite odd to come back to the basic game from the full game. But it was even better seeing Mike's enthusiasm for the game and watching him put his strategies into effect. The first game, he was tentative, the second he played much much better. I can see it being a feature of our lunch games next year...if we can persuade Tom that he should embrace the icons as well.
