The kids wanted two challenge games for the last night of our challenge, and who I am to argue? I brought out an old favorite that hasn't been played in a while, Through the Desert.

Through The Desert comes from the late 1990s, the golden age of Knizia games. I really love his heavier games from that era, such as Samurai, Tigris & Euphrates, and Through the Desert. I rate this a 9 and this is my 6th recorded play on BGG, although I have played it at least a few dozen times overall.

The kids had not played in years so I explained the game to them again and we were off. Everyone tried to grab water holes, connect to Oasis and block off areas, but of course, like all good Knizia games, you never have time to do everything you would like.

Near the end of the game, I glanced over to Melissa's side of the board and noticed that somehow she failed to place her initial yellow camel. Interesting way of handicapping. It was too late to redo the game so we quickly ended it. Final Scores: Larry 64, Daughter 59, Son 58, Melissa 46.

That was unsatisfying so we immediately setup the game again. This time everyone placed all their initial camels. I played a fairly uninspired game, as it seemed I was always one turn too late in trying to accomplish anything. Son seemed to be doing really well as he connected to several Oasis and blocked off a decent sized chunk of the board. The final score confirmed my suspicion.

Final Scores: Son 78, Melissa 63, Larry 50, Daughter 57.

The gaming evening wasn't over as we played 5 games of Loco!, and one game each of Qwirkle and Ingenious to finish out the year.

The December Challenge is complete. We had a lot of fun playing and I hope you enjoyed reading about our games. Here's to an even better 2012. Happy New Year.

Thanks for the marathon game-blogging - I enjoyed reading it! Plus I picked up at least one game for the family as a direct result (my own blog post coming soon).

Happy new year!
