Decisions Indecisions

Who's the more foolish? The fool or fool that plays after the fool?

Usually my family doesn't know what to get me for Christmas so I end up with some kind of gift certificate and/or license to take a trip to the FLGS. I've been wondering what to pick up this time. Games, obviously, but which ones?

One idea was a game to fit in our couple game slot. We played a lot of Parade last year and while it will see some play in 2012, something else in the short but thinky game slot would be nice. I was almost set on this, with Jaipur and Biblios popping up on a lot of 2-player lists and both seem to offer the short but interesting game play I was looking for. But then I get to reading the latest New-to-you Geek List and start seeing some other titles: PAX? Maybe that?

Then in the longer game category, there's the game I have gone back and forth over the most: Ora et Labora. I have followed the news on this game for a long time. The videos filtering back from Essen looked intriguing. But then some folks said it was disappointing so I thought I might pass. Then others said it was amazing. And then people said the components were an issue, but others said it wasn't that big of a deal. Did I decide yet?

And then there is the new hotness, Eclipse. The theme, mechanics and play time all seem great to me. A bit of luck by the look of things, but I don't think that will bother me. Can I get my wife to play it? Well, she plays Race for the Galaxy with me often and occasionally Agricola and it sounds like everything works smoothly in the game. But then, I have procrastinated too long already so I am waiting for the reprint anyway.

I actually have one on the list that I am sure about. As a big big Pratchett fan, Discworld: Ankh-Morpork is surely a must. I think I've convinced myself I don't need any collector or special edition. Pretty sure anyway.

I just realized I have Analysis Paralysis over deciding which games to get. How will I cope with playing the things?

Am I alone in my indecision?

I've been the same way with Ora et Labora (especially since a good friend of mine is picking it up)....but eventually pulled the trigger. I don't own Le Havre so that kind of pushed the decision.

As far as Eclipse goes, it's gone over well so far with my fiancé. She isn't a gamer per se, but she humors me, and actually quite enjoys Agricola. Our only game of Eclipse was light on conflict so it could change, but definitely still worth looking at...

I haven't really heard anything bad about Ora besides the component issues. I doubt you'd be disappointed with that one!

What about Mage Knight? It plays great solo!

Thanks for the comments. I don't have Le Havre either - we did try it, but found it rather long. I have a feeling Ora will end up being bought.

Mage Knight came out of nowhere for me, I hadn't heard anything about it. Another one that caught my eye. How am I supposed to pick?

If you thought Le Havre was too long I'd advise against MK (even though I love it). It takes longer than Le Havre to play.

Browsing again, and remembered I had been looking at something medium weight: looked at Stone Age or Egizia and then Ninjato looks very impressive too.

Probably I should get my butt to a game night and try some of them out first.

If there is one near by, that is certainly the way to go.

I feel your pain about the game purchase indecision. You can always fall back on trades to remedy a dud but that's no fun. I get caught in the trap of second guessing myself inside the store. Bad move.

As far as some of the games you mentioned :

Jaipur - My wife really enjoys this one and it's a smooth pleasure to play. I go back and forth on it if there are viable strategies. It's light and has the random card flop but is, most importantly, very fun.

Biblios - Definitely more interesting to play than Jaipur. It doesn't hit the table as much as Jaipur but it is a solid game.

Stone Age - Fantastic 2 player game. If someone goes on a civ card run they may become a serious runaway leader. You have to keep an eye on balancing things out.

I have my eye on Egizia as well.

I stay away from hotness until a bigger sampling of reviews and ratings come in.

Most of my plays are with my wife so check my collection comments on our top plays.
