Going into Gen Con in 2011, this was the game we were most excited getting. My wife wanted me to get it, so on Thursday when the dealer hall opened on Thursday I rushed back to the Wiz-Kids booth and got in line to get Quarriors. Since Gen Con we have played Quarriors several times, but has it lived up to our hype?
Game Overview Quarriors is best described as a deck building dice game. Players have a starting bag of basic dice. many of these dice have "quiddity symbols" which when rolled produce money that can be used to buy more dice. The dice that players will be buying are creature dice. Some of the sides on the creature dice contain quiddity symbols, but they also have three levels of creatures. All creatures have a cost, an attack value, and defense value. When a creature is summoned it automatically attacks every other's players area and possibly eliminates them. If a summoned creature manages to survive until the beginning of a player's turn then it will score points. When a die scores, then the player as the opportunity to "cull" (remove) a die from their discard pile. Many of the dice have asterisks on them, and depending on the card in play the asterisks have special abilities. There are also spell dice that have various effects.
The Game We Played We actually played Quarriors twice. The first time we played by the basic rules. My wife got off to an early lead by using the Defender of the Pale that had the ability to make other dice that scored at the same time to be worth extra points. However, on my first turn I was able to buy the Quake Dragon that can score extra points if the double asterisks are rolled. This allowed me to catch up, and after I got the lead I did not lose it. The second game we played, we used the variant rules that allow two buys a turn, and when a die is scored it is culled. We both used the Wizard that had the ability when it was scored made all buys that turn to be -2. I also used a ghost that when it scored I could cull a basic quiddity die and add the ghost to the dice I was rolling. In the end I was able to roll creatures more often than my wife and I won that game as well.
Our Thoughts My rating: 3.5 (it's ok) My Thoughts: I like Quarriors. It is a good light game, and rolling dice is intrinsically fun. However, every time I play it I feel like there should be a bit more to the game than there is.
Her Rating: 2.5 (don't like much but willing to play) Her Thoughts: I want to like this game more than I do, but I am just not feeling it.
Verdict Combined Rating: 6 Rolling dice is the biggest appeal to Quarriors. We did like the variant rules quite a bit, but I am not sure what niche this fits in our game closet. We have better deck building options, and we probably have dice games we enjoy more as well. My wife said she would be willing to trade it, but I am not quite sure if I want to part with yet. I guess at this point, Quarriors is on the bubble. As we continue to play through our games perhaps my opinion will change one way or the other.
