How not to redesign

I was really hoping for the new Thunderstone to be great. They were talking about improved rules. That if done right could elevate it from being a mediocre deckbuilder that it is right now, to one of the great ones (it has some cumbersome mechanics like the way monsters end up in your hand). Some of the newer deckbuilders have really great mechanics. But this post is not about mechanics or rules.

They also changed the card layout. I agree that the old icons needed to be changed as they were really meaningless but they managed to mess up the quite good layout into this thing here:

The second one is the old one. See how bigger the art feels. The vertical space is more important in this case than the horizontal. Also the text-box is too big, you don't need so much space for the text.

see more images here: http://www.alderac.com/thunderstone/2012/01/10/get-down-to-b...

And now here are some good examples for card design. Distinguishable icons, enough space for the art and a non-obtrusive text-box

If they stick with this layout I'm pretty sure I'm not going to buy this. Art and (layout)design with board and card games nowadays is one of the most important factors with me. And in this case this is an obvious decline.

Sort of unfair to compare the Flaming Sword to a Torch though

And why would that be? It could have been two completely different cards. (By the way I did not find a scan of the original torch)

Anyway I found someone comparing these two in this post: http://boardgamegeek.com/article/8220557#8220557

But this one by user Boromir_and_Kermit is an even better one:

And then funnily enough the space for the art does not seem to matter much

I don't mind they are redoing the artwork and the layout that much, the icons needed updating like you said.

I am more worried about the rule changes, we don't know anything yet so we will see...

Clearly, the goal was to not really change the layout and position of icons. So, there wasn't that much they could do. Whether a complete reboot with an entirely different frame would have caused less strife, who's to say, but that was AEG's call in order to ensure the cards are still playable alongside the old cards.

What is also unclear from a visual comparison is how limiting the text box being that small was. If they wanted more complicated rules, they simply couldn't make the card. Now they can.

They could have simply used a smaller or a different font. Anyway, they are doing it now, so the same text requires less space.

That militia card even had a transparency effect. So the layout is really a step back in my opinion.

The transparency was an interesting idea, but in the long run unfeasible to keep up with. Most of the artwork in the newer sets didn't take advantage of it, so AEG decided to scrap that particular idea entirely.

Font size is an entirely different issue that had supporters on either side. The super-tiny font on cards tends to intimidate people who haven't been playing card games for years. New players often don't like the 8 or even 6 pt font used to fit a lot of text on a card.

You can find a very good article about font size on cards here.

I at least, would always choose bigger art over bigger fonts.

But anyway there is still space to play around with and they could squeeze a bigger image with bigger fonts on the same card with maybe smaller or no borders at all. It's just a question design ability. There are some really good examples out there.
