In early January 2012, I posted a teaser round-up of games that would appear on the Nürnberg 2012 Preview – a Preview that is now live, by the way, so feel free to see what German publishers have coming out in early 2012. One of those items was the Star Wars: Battle of Hoth game from LEGO depicted at upper right and I naturally joked about this design landing squarely in the overlap of the Venn diagram of gamers, SF geeks and toy fanatics.

Little did I know what else was coming:

All that's missing in this title is a cameo from Buffy, the Vampire Slayer or, I don't know, Gollum.

In any case, here's a description of Klaus Teuber's Star Trek Catan, which will sound familiar to most every regular BGG reader:

Quote:
Star Trek Catan takes two well-known media properties and merges them into, well, into something that is 95% The Settlers of Catan glossed with Trek tropes and spiced with new special powers related to Trek personalities.

In Star Trek Catan, players start the game with two small space stations at the intersection of three planets, with each planet supplying resources based on the result of a dice roll. Players collect and trade these resources – Dilithium, Tritanium, food, oxygen and water – in order to build spaceships that connect regions in the galaxy, establish small and large space stations at new intersection points in order to increase resource acquisition, and acquire development cards that provide victory points (VPs) or special abilities.

On a dice roll of 7, a Klingon ship swoops in to prevent resource production on one planet, while taxing spacegoers who hold too many resources.

The one new element in Star Trek Catan compared to the Settlers version is a set of character cards, each featuring one of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sulu, Scott, Uhura, Chekov, Chapel, Rand or Sarek. Each character card has two special powers that the holder can use on his turn, such as a forced trade.

Star Trek Catan is due out in March 2012 and will retail for €37. Live long and don't roll 7s!

ASL ... yes, this is my Desert Island Game. If I have to give up all my 3000+ games and only allowed to keep one, this would be it. This bloody game stood the test of time. Around for more than 25 years - simply the best.

I have fond memories of playing Teuber's great games (Settlers of Catan, Adel Verpflichtet, Barbarossa, Lowenherz, Drunter & Druber) when I first got started in this hobby about 10 years ago. I'm glad that he was able to "cash in" as a board game designer. But doesn't that then also allow him to just spend his time working on board games at his own leisure and not have to worry about working other jobs to make ends meet? What happened to coming up with a new game idea every once in awhile, this guy once had real talent and now he's way past just phoning it in. Brutal.

He once claimed that he liked the Catan- system so much, that he just likes to concentrate on using it on new and interesting ways.

But I didnt expect this... I dont really know what to think. Honestly!

Probably because a Star Trekfarers would have cost €60-80. Who knows, though? Maybe that's on the calendar for 2013 if this version goes over well...

I can. Its a terrible idea. How much of exactly the same can the boardgamers endure? I won't touch the original Settlers, nor any of the other products that came after it, because the same thing over and over again is boring me to hell. Except the card game, which really is more of a variation to the basic idea of Settlers.

And honestly, I think that his claim of "liking the Catan-system so much that he is only concentrating on the approx. 4 same pages of rules for the rest of his life" is a poor excuse for not being creative since 1995 and just milking the cash cow as long as possible. And just pasting on silly themes isn't what I would see as interesting new ways of exploring the game system.

What's to expect next... Catan Zombies??

Don't you get it?

Firstly, they will bring out this game.
The first expansion will be to play it with 5-6 players.
Then they will bring out a Starfarers-type expansion.
And you also have to buy the expansion-module for 5-6 players.

$200 later you end up with what could've easily been included in the original game.

...is the right answer.

I only have the original Catan and am highly unlikely to buy any other versions or expansions. That said, it's an excellent gateway game and if a new theme brings in more people to the hobby, why should anyone complain or make derogatory remarks about the designer?

In my opinion Catan system is tending to Catanpoly. Like Monopoly they are selling the same franchise over and over again, the same game with a different wrap. I usually enjoy Catan. Many plays are funny, some are not because the game gets stuck or some player loses any chance right from the beginning, Thus I find it in general an ok game, but some fresh air would be nice.

Character cards are introduced which have different powers that may be used during the game.

Quote:

Next in 2013: Monopoly Catan - or Catan Monopoly?

I also immediately thought of the silly media tie-in versions of Monopoly, Risk and Clue. Catan is nearly 20 years old, so I guess it's time for them to start doing the same thing. It's actually sort of a sign of how mainstream and accepted the game is. But using first-series Star Trek does suggest a pretty restricted geek market.

Look at the number of differently themed Monopoly games and you have the answer to your question...

I don't think its an excellent Gateway game. Way too long (often > 120 mins), and also with lots of frustration-potential (dice).

Why should anyone complain, you ask? Because it's important to have a critical look at things, and even more so when its so friggin' obvious that it's just more of the same (just with a ridiculous theme pasted on).

Yes, it's the way to "Monopolization" of Settlers with dozens of re-themes. I don't care.

I might buy this. I had the original version but some pieces got lost playing during the years, and now another friend of mine has a new copy, we still play it sometimes.
If for some reason I decide to own personally another copy, it will probably be this and not the original... the game is the same, the Star Trek coat is if not else funny, a change from the usual sheeps and woods will be welcome!

True enough: but it sure sounds fun! I'll buy it and play it, though the original Catan I bought in Salzburg the year it came out hasn't been touched since the 90's.

I do own a lot of the variants, including German editions not published in U.S., because the theme and variations in play are very enjoyable. The addition of character cards and the rich theme make this a winner in my book -- AND I suspect this will introduce a whole new generation to our hobby.

Come on, think about it: how many of the uninitiated, given the choice, would choose Star Trek Catan over Settlers? (Though Settlers would still be the preferred game amongst most couples, I presume.)

I doubt it. Zombies are not really hip in Germany. I dont know why, but I think the only Zombie game that came out here in the last decade was Zombie dice (was there a Zombie Munchkin? That might have made it too).

Simpsons Catan
Family Guy Catan
My Little Pony Catan
Pirates of the Carribean Catan (ha!)
Here and Now Catan
Cabbage Patch Catan
National Parks Catan
Kool Aid Catan
Pepsi Catan
Dominion of Catan
Spongebob Square Catan (perhaps this one would use squares instead of hexes?)

In any case, I don't know how I feel about this... but mostly I feel that I won't buy it because I have enough of that game system in my house.

Yeah, I have to agree with this, sounds like a lame cash-in to me.

Frankly, gaming passed Catan by years ago anyway, I think whatever niche it once held as the #1 gateway game has been taken over by newer and better games.

So not only has the shark been jumped, but on further examination the shark was dead of old age to begin with.

It's not the idea of Star Trek Catan that bothers me... I love both of those properties and I think the combination could have worked well. But to have everyone playing as the Federation, in competition with each other? That just doesn't make sense at all. Federation vs. Klingons vs. Romulans vs. Cardassians, with Q or the Ferengi as the robber... that would be great.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

On the one hand, it's a brilliant idea, combining two great franchises to make something that will attract the masses.

On the other hand, that's the same thing Monopoly have done over and over again, and it's not exactly the most attractive characteristic of Monopoly. Where will it end? Once is a random occurrence, twice is a habit.

And on the third hand, this is sadly something I want to play. But I'm not sure I want to BUY it, because I know it won't get a second play. Ever. Just like most people's Monopoly end up in the wardrobe once they've played it and realises that it's just the same as all the other versions they have lying around at home.

My main thought is that it's clearly the modern Monopoly. Catan has become the latest in a series of decent or halfway-decent games turned into themed gifts for those who don't know enough about games to purchase for their kids and friends.

Everything-Opoly, Everything-Cluedo, now Everything-Catan.

I'm all for Klaus making a living off his games, but as others have suggested it'd be nice to see him using his talents to develop different games, not more of the same. Even using the Catan name, like with Starfarers, can get totally different games some purchase with the mass market and help expand the market for the hobby... but not by just re-theming Settlers.

And while the art and production values look wonderful, the theme is no more well-integrated than Star Wars Opoly - as others have suggested, using the base game of Starfarers would have made a much more logical game than this one.

If Klaus uses the money to expand his game development, great. But if he's just going to keep licensing new themes for the same game, I'd rather see that shelf space at Target going to other products.

Laugh out loud at all the l33t geeks who feel the need to play internet guru with their oh-so-superior taste in games.

Remdinder, guys: you play with wooden cubes, little men, cards and dice all day. What children do, in other words. You're about one-fiftieth as awesome as you think you are.

Drat. I was just about to do that until I scrolled to the bottom of the page.

May pick this up if I come across it in my local shop. Have a copy of Settlers that doesn't get played much but a new skin may breathe new life into the game.

My old copy of settlers is pretty worn out. I don't like to play it much, but my parents really do, so they ask to play it when they come over. Everyone in my family is also a trekkie. So I'll probably buy this.

Look - everyone here, in general, despises monopoly itself, so re-themed monopolies are just adding to the insult. But settlers, regardless to there being better gateways games made over the past 15 years, is still a good game. So if you enjoy the game, and you enjoy Star Trek, then it seems to me a game that is worthy of adding to your collection, if only for the novelty. I don't expect major innovations, just some pretty bits to update my lovingly worn copy of catan.

Cheers!

I like Catan plenty but the problem with this is I can't imagine having an experience that will feel like Star Trek. They may have pretty space graphics and overpriced plastic space stations and ships but it won't feel like the show. It will feel like Catan. Regular catan is cheaper and has a host of supplements that can expand it. This is obviously an attempt to appeal to non-gamers familiar with the science fiction property to make more sales. Not that there's anything wrong with that but for people who really like boardgames, the original version is a better choice again for the price and expansion potential I mentioned.
If they really wanted to push the Star Trek idea they should have had the players play different races from the show (Federation, Klingons, Romulons, Vulcans) instead of just different colours and had the robber be Orion Pirates as Erik Only previously suggested.
Now the cards with special abilities sound interesting an I'll be curious to see how they work out. If they add to the game, I'm sure I'll be seeing a supplement with them for traditional Catan. Or someone will submit a file with re-themed cards.

Off-topic: when they rethemed Catan with a Viking theme in the latest editions, why didn't they rename the "Soldier" cards as "Jarls" instead of "Knights"?

This.

Come on people, we all know very well that we are not the intended market for this game, so why the endless bitching? Does it harm you in some way, or does it just offend your precious sensibilities that someone, anyone, might actually like a game like this (or Monopoly, or any of the other "mainstream" games that are routinely reviled here)?

I say once again - the people who are vocal here (and I fully acknowledge that I am in this group) are an abnormal minority, greatly hostage to group-think. And largely divorced from the reality of what most people think of as board games - and play.

Think of it this way - average person plays Monopoly. Average person plays themed Monopoly. Average person then sees and played Star Trek-themed Catan, discovers "real" Catan, and then gets sucked into what we regard as "normal" games... Where's the problem?

It would have been a golden occasion to bring starfarerscof Catan back, and that is what I thought it was all about first.
Of course it would have been a much better fit too.

That is what subtitles are for. Or IMDB:

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Stardate 45944.1 Picard is struck by an energy beam from an alien probe, which renders him unconscious and places him in the life of a citizen on the planet Kataan, with his memory of the Enterprise intact.

It's not the idea of Star Trek Catan that bothers me... I love both of those properties and I think the combination could have worked well. Agreed - I would be much more interested in this if each player represented a different race / affiliation. As it is, and even though I'm a pretty big Trek fan, I'll be passing on this one.

...is the right answer.

I only have the original Catan and am highly unlikely to buy any other versions or expansions. That said, it's an excellent gateway game and if a new theme brings in more people to the hobby, why should anyone complain or make derogatory remarks about the designer?

Excellent point. In fact, I was going to make it myself...

How about serving up some cheese with all this whine?

It is very simple: If you think it's stupid, don't buy it. That's the beauty of the free market (while we still have it) - you get to vote with your dollars. If enough people vote "no", Kosmos gets stuck with a bunch of them and figures out that a cheesy themed Catan was a bad idea. If enough people vote "yes", then it wasn't such a stupid idea after all.
