The French gaming sites are loaded with info about titles that will be released or shown at Festival International des Jeux de Cannes – an annual game festival in Cannes, France taking place February 25-27 in 2011. Here is a sampling of the titles being shown there, along with other game announcements and updates on forthcoming titles:

According to designer Antoine Bauza, Belgian publisher Repos Production will be showing off both the Leaders expansion for 7 Wonders and the second expansion for Ghost Stories known as Black Secret. Both items are still in prototype for now, with nothing more than a name for Black Secret, but woot!

• As reported on Jeux sur un Plateau, the first game from the newly revived Jeux Descartes will be a new edition of Philippe Keyaerts' Evo with a complete graphics overhaul to replace the cartoony dinosaurs with weighty, realistic beasts. Advance (and non-final) images are posted on the Asmodee website.

• The bluffing card game Skull & Roses from Hervé Marly – not yet released but still in the running for this year's l'As d'Or, a French game of the year award – now has its own website, with rules in German, French, Dutch and Spanish. The game is scheduled to debut at Cannes in February 2011.

• Tric Trac reports that Christophe Boelinger will be at Cannes with his company Ludically to show off projects currently in the works, including a two-player card game Castle, an abstract game for 2-4 players called Sarena, a party game called Rimes et Rap that comes with its own CD of music, and the next expansion for Dungeon Twister, one featuring lots of traps.

• Jedisjeux reports that Libellud will not only release Bugs & Co. at Cannes and show off the previously announced Dixit Odyssey, but it will also have a third new game: Et Toque! Nothing more than the names of the designers – Barbara Turquier and Emmanuelle Piard – and a tiny cover showing chefs is available for now.

Alderac Entertainment Group has announced Thunderstone: Thornwood Siege, with a release date of June 2011. Here's the short description: "This expansion to Thunderstone introduces new monsters such as the Raiders and Siege Engines which bring the battle to you! These monsters can destroy cards in the village, kill heroes not yet hired, and even hurt you on turns when you are avoiding the dungeon!"

Sands of Time Games is releasing a small card-based expansion for Catacombs titled Dark Passageways.

• Spanish publisher nestorgames has released Javier García's Mecca. Rules posted in English on the Mecca page on the nestorgames website.

• Purple Pawn has posted an overview of Battleship Galaxies, which is due out from Hasbro in Q2/Q3 2011.

• Fantasy Flight Games has posted rules (PDF) for Mansions of Madness.

• Designer Michael Schacht has posted an image of the extra cards for his card game Coloretto that were included in a recent Abacusspiele catalog – "Katalog-Edition 11". Time to download and cut!

• Pegasus Spiele has posted a new German-language scenario called "Die Gruft" (The Tomb) for Quest: Zeit der Helden.

I think the cartoony dinosaurs in EVO are a better fit because of the light hearted gameplay and humorous cards. But maybe they changed that also.

And what the hell is that puny human doing on top of the dinosaur!? Is this a new type of gene?

That gene also disturbs me. I don't think they should be involved in this game. And yes, the cartoony art is fine for the game for me, but I'm still interested in how this new version will turn out.

With the new more realistic artwork, one of which featured a human wearing a Chinese-peasant-like hat on, could it be that they're trying to appeal to both the Dinotopia and Creationist crowds?

I'm also quite disappointed with the chinese wearing guy over the dino and the serious look of the artwork. I would make no change at all. One of the original Evo's best thing is the humorous cards, the umbrellas,...

After seeing this first re-desing image my interest about getting a copy went to absolute zero. I can't figure Evo turned into a serious game.

One big dissapointment that follows another artwork disaster called Automobile from Mayfair.

For the Coloretto "Katalog-Edition 11", aren't the cards just re-print of the Extra cards? Coloretto: Die Extrakarten

Apparently, they are – with a few less cards. I'm sure those bonus cards are a new introduction to Coloretto for some people, though, which is why Abacusspiele would print them.

It seems funny to me that people are saying they prefer non-realistic art and then complaining that a person riding the dinosaur is unrealistic? Maybe they are making a move from "cartoon" unrealistic to "fantasy" unrealistic.

Asmodee is really looking to assault my wallet, with expansions to 7 Wonders, Dixit and Ghost Stories. All are favorites in my group.

Chillax guys...

The text underneath says (+/- translated):
"The preliminary drawing that we present here is typical of a game's graphic design process. First step of the design, this type of drawing helps us to identify the graphic style, the universe, the tone of a game. It's a kind of benchmark of the visual qualities that we desire on EVO. Of course, we will reveal the other drawings, graphics and advanced stages as soon as we have them."

That doesn't say you'll have Kwai Chang Caine riding Godzilla in the final product (wouldn't it be cool, by the way?), it just gives a sneak peak on the early design stage (the art can change quite a bit till the end of the process).

Wow, "Battleship Galaxies" looks far and away more appealing than I'd envisioned. After seeing the new electronic "Battleship" featuring modest movement and a few twists such as scout planes and certain random events, I'd pictured the same thing in a space setting.

But this looks far more like a mass-market edition of GW's old "Battlefleet Gothic" or at least something in that genre.

I hope the combat system isn't too random for the rest of the game, though--it sounds as though targeting a given ship might be entirely random in its resolution. But perhaps I'm wrong here.

In any case this looks like a likely contender for shelf space. Possibly even for multiple sets.

Some good news for this year. It's becoming a very exciting.

New expansions to Dixit, Thunderstone, etc... Now i have to think what to buy next with a lot of choices, i would rather get them all... laugh
There's one board game that really is getting hyped is Mansions of Madness from Fantasy Flight Games. This new board has a theme of Arkham Horror and has a campaign with a lot of puzzles which players must solve. Very Interesting!!!

What it really disapoints me after reading this post is about Pegasus Spiele. I still waiting for the ressurection of their Return of the Heroes (AKA: Die Rückkehr der Helden). I would like to have a remake of this board game, because i like the artwork, the theme, modular mapping and the game system after reading some reviews. I'm a fan of D&D Games (Dungeons & Dragons) in Boardgames, RPG and videogames.
They shouldn't let that base game die, after releasing the expansion Under the Shadow .
I know the cost of designs, translations and printings, but if they want to expanding their business to gain some profit, they need to invest a little on exportating some products to those international countries where the gamers numbers are much higher than local country.
