We were 5. While waiting for Marion and Richard we pulled out King of Tokyo and played two games of that. Then we needed a five player, and after some discussion went for Outpost. It was an absolutely terrible game for me – I made a decision not to buy the third Heavy Equipment, buying a warehouse instead and hoarding money, and going for what Sami calls the “water strategy” early game. Unfortunately the early buildings didn’t help me at all, so I ended up buying stuff that wasn’t particularly useful for me, and got into an even worse hold. Careful saving of money did get me a Moon Base in the late game, but it wasn’t enough to save me from a dismal last. It was clear early on that Sami and Colin, in titanium, were competing with Marion, in research, for the win – and Sami emerged victorious.

Next we went for Peloponnes. I had the luxury good start civ, which is my least favourite, and had real men problems all game. Marion on the other hand had the opposite problem – she had so many men she didn’t know what to do with them all! However in the end game, with all the supply rounds coming out on top of each other, the scores were all remarkably similar, with most players feeding either 7 or 8 people, and it came down to tie-breaks on the other score – apart from Sami, who was miles ahead!

Next we chose Breaking Away, which is usually Colin’s game. It looked like it was this time, as he got one of his bikes into such a big lead that it got a huge breaking away bonus – and without even using one of its other huge numbers! That bike was first in both the second sprint, and the final. However, I’d gone heavily for points in the first sprint, and was lucky in the end-game with my bikes picking up quite a number of the higher positions, and just beat him overall on points. It was a very bizarre race though – before the first sprint we’d lost a whole pack of four bikes, and we had a patch mid-game where either bikes had 3s, or they had absolutely giant numbers!

We finished with another game of King of Tokyo, which was new to Marion and Richard.

Was this with the Peloponnes expansion, or just the base game?

With the expansion. We always play including the first expansion. We also use the start civs from the second expansion, but not the rest of it.

I should have been more clear Was this with the 9th round, or only 8?

I find that ninth round to be particularly punishing, with sometimes three feeding rounds in a row, along with some last disasters. The 9th round tiles can be a bit swingy, too.

I have only played with 8 rounds once, but I think I prefer it.

Only eight. The ninth round was in the second expansion. We definitely don't like the extra round - it makes grain strategies way stronger, and the last round tiles are really swingy. After playing it a few times we always leave that part of the second expansion in the box!
