Bobby's Games

I will be posting monthly recaps of my gaming which I have been doing in GeekLists. I'll also be commenting on games on occasion, though I can tell you that I will be behind the curve because I just don't get to play the new games as soon as some people do.

Through the Desert made it to the table. I taught it to Nico and Ben and thought they made a big mistake by placing their initial riders such that I was mostly alone in the center of the board. I was able to create a huge line of the strawberry group which enclosed a large area. Once that was done, I was working on closing the other side of the line off with the same color, but the game ended and I was one camel away from gaining another 10 points, but I was sure I was still going to win.

I'm a huge fan of playing the game with three players. That number strikes the perfect balance of having a competition for the points while keeping the game moving at a brisk pace.

I call the camel colors strawberry, grape, butter cream, lime, and mint since they are so pastel and look like fruity candies.

And speaking of fruit...

I have enjoyed Finca since I first played it. I am putting together my new bookshelves tonight so I should have most of my board games unpacked and shelved in the next couple of days, so I can be fairly confident in picking this that I will be able to locate it.

The general idea is you collect fruit to take to market. The fruit is collected by moving one of your workers along a rondel. Instead of moving the a worker, you can turn in the fruit at the market and collect VPs. It's simple to explain, but the choices can be tough. It also comes with a bunch of neat fruit pieces which should appeal to any game bit parakeets out there.

Yeah, they both do play well with two. I like Through the Desert a little more than Finca for two, but then I also like TtD more than I like Finca, no matter the number of players.

I wish I could keep everyoe calling them by the names I came up with, but it eventually breaks down into people asking for "red", "yellow", etc. Losers.

I checked your games rated and nothing I see would indicate that you wouldn't like Through the Desert. The rating you have of Arkadia as a 10 indicates that you might even really like it. Both games are ones where you have limited actions and tough choices to make. Unlike Arkadia, there is no hidden information in Through the Desert, though once you do score, you put the chips in a pile so you don't know someone's exact score. I get the same kind of turn anxiety when playing both games, which is a good thing.

I see you have Metropolys. Do you think it's anything like TtD? For some reason, I thought it was and then never really considered getting TtD. And, by the way, that is some game collection you have!

Not really. I like them both, though.

Metropolys is a bidding game, using the numbered buildings to bid for control of a spot/area. Through the Desert is all about placing the camels in such a way as to score more points. by placing on watering hole spaces worth 1-3 points, touching an oasis with one of your caravans (5 points for each of your caravans to touch a particular oasis), and having the most camels in your caravan of each of the colors (10 points).

You also score points for areas you completely enclose with one color. The score is equal to the number of spaces you seal off, plus you score the watering holes and any oases (which never happens) enclosed in the area.

Since you are only placing two camels a turn, you have to decide which move is the best for you each turn while hoping the other players don't mess with your plans.

Yeah, it is too many games. No kids and no wife means no one to spend on but me and I spend too much on games. I hope to pare down my collection over the next few years.

Well, now you've gone and done it--I'm going to have to get TtD! And when I do, I promise to use the proper color names.

I love Metropolys, especially 2p, and find myself holding my breath hoping that my opponent doesn't realize where I'm trying to maneuver him. Sounds like I might get that same delicious tension in Through the Desert.
