A few things to discuss today:

Firstly, what a fantastic game 'Lord of the Rings: The Card Game' is! I bought this s a few weeks ago and it really is something special. From the gorgeous components to the quite elegant game mechanics and it's set in Tolkien's wonderful Middle Earth. Being a solo gamer for most part, the fact that it's a solo game is very appealing and the scenario aspect of the game is also what triggered my interest in the first place. And it's so blooming difficult to beat the scenarios! It's nearly always a bloodfest in my attic, yet I've shelled out for the first 2 expansion packs already and keep trying to beat them - I'm hooked.

Secondly, how difficult it is to design an Enemy for DWSSG when you're not keen on the source material. I've encountered this difficulty before with the Seventh Doctor expansion, which people know is not my favourite era of the show. Now that I'm down to 2 pages left to complete 'Silence Will Fall' it's just the latest Christams special 'The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe' to fill in. And, of course, there's no bloody villain! So what's a designer to do?

Make one up of course! Well, no not quite as I've always wanted players and the game to have the ability to recreate (if the dice fall that way) the TV episode, so here I have to change some motivation slightly. So the bumbling Droxil and his mates are replaced by nasty, brutal Harvest Rangers who will stop at nothing to see their greedy plans succeed. Yes, you may still encounter Droxil and his team and gain them as Allies, but it's more likely that you'll encounter nasty Harvest Rangers (who still sound like a football team...) who just want to either keep you out of the way or kill you rather than letting you stop their amoral and corrupt plans! You can still get hold of a Harvester vehicle too and even use it to Defeat the Rangers if you've got some Pilots and Engineers too.

In between watching some 'Fellowship of the Ring' with my son, who loves it, I've also watched a fantastic first Doctor adventure - 'The Crusades'. This is one of the era's all time greats and thanks to 2 episodes and a photo reconstruction and audio soundtrack we can all enjoy it. I can't praise this one enough and this is probably my favourite (not counting stories which are totally lost - like Marco Polo or The Massacre) Hartnell story. The quality of dialogue, acting and plotting is masterful with special praise for Bernard Kay as Saladin, Julian Glover as Richard, and Jean Marsh as Joanna who are pitch perfect in their roles.

A stunning 9.5/10 from me (and only not 10 because episode 4 features very little of the 3 main guests above).

Anyone else like this little gem?

The Crusades is near-perfect early Who in my opinion so I agree with your rating!

Since the Harvest Rangers come from Androzani Major is there any potential for a chance Sharaz Jek/Androzani Minor cross-over event type thing? I know what I mean!

Glad you like LotR - its got me hooked too. No matter how bloody it gets, I just go back for more

What do you think about LoTR's story-gamish aspect? I'm usually so busy with counting resources, damage etc. that there's just no time for imagination.

I'm not sure yet - certainly as I'm still learning the game, my focus is the same as yours - but I do think it has heaps of potential in the quest format they've developed

Crusades is one story don't recall first time around, Web Planet is the earliest one. I'm sure if the county has that story but I'm determined to see it as part of my Hartnell viewing quest.

Glad to hear you enjoy LoTR... I really enjoy this gem... it's a great way to play solo and not feel like I'm just solving a puzzle.

While I love being immersed in the world of Tolkien, the imaginative story element is not quite as strong as DWSSG. But they both have a place for me.

PS - Just finished watching the first season of the DW reboot - Doctor 9... Actually got my wife to watch with me. We both enjoyed it enough that we're getting the next season from the library.

Wouldn't have been interested in watching it if it wasn't for the game.

That's really interesting george.

how do you see the various gaming elements - enemies, adventures etc- coming from the TV episodes? is it a case of 'ah - that's what he meant!'

"AH, thats what he meant."

This has happenned on several Doctor Who TV shows. A picture says a thousand words. The Doctor Who game really does mirror the tv show.

Great job.

I too love The Crusade - and I suspect that only Marco Polo would top it in the pure historicals list (although based on the reconstruction, I think that MP is a bit too long.)

And I also love your solution to the Xmas dilemma - I actually quite liked the less confrontational way Moffat chose to do it, but obviously it needed something else for the game (although maybe it flags up a semi-flaw in the game system that can't easily handle a scenario like this?) Very neat.

LOTR:LCG is like most storytelling games in that the more you focus on the mechanics the more mechanical the game feels. I hated the game at first because I felt like the theme was pasted on and all the mattered was the math BUT eventually I realized the problem was how I was playing.

I stopped trying to build the ultimate deck and stated building theme/fluff decks. Role playing the characters rather then just focusing on the math is key to really enjoying this game. Most of my best story experiences have actually been loses which is unique for a storytelling game.

I also find that its important to take notes (like for a session report) as you play any storytelling game because it forces you to think about each moment in relation to what has come before - thus helping you interpret random events in a more cohesive way.
