Please, Rio Grande, tell us it's not the final art!
Well, it's even quite horrifying for a sketch.

Well, I guess the guy's face has simply frozen. But these dogs...? Are they dogs at all? Or some hellish creatures? What are those pink things (lungs?) they are eating during running?
And what's happening here? The guy has another man's hand in his right hand I'm sure - that would explain why he has such an unnatural long hand. But what are the dogs doing? There is one who is, I guess, being born from the bag-like vehicle. The next one, with the small-face big head, seems to wear black nylons. And the two bat-eared crazy monsters in the front are just trying to trip up each other. I guess they will succeed in the next second...
And what are those dog-like things with multiple heads in the background?
A buddy noted it might be a secret spin-off of The Thing (or Panic Station, if you will). That would explain a lot.

I rarely get goosebumps when looking at board game boxes but this one does it.

The gentleman on the left is Roald Amundsen, the first man to make it to the South Pole. He's always struck me (as have photos of him) as a very somber, sober, serious sort of man. Seeing this, umm, "illustration" of Amundsen reminds me of those Star Trek episodes where Spock is stricken with unnatural emotion.
"Eirik! Commander Amundsen has gone mad! He's laughing like a deranged auk, and is feeding the dogs the lungs of Scott's men!"

horrible face, horrible dogs. Looks as if someone resized it but the proportions are OFF.

it must be a sketch only. I hope.

Amundsen can laugh, but looks like this:

Two things are off about that center dog.

First, his upper dentures are falling out.

Second, where is that leg between his rear legs coming from? I don't think it belongs to the dog next to him. Random disembodied dog limb?

This picture is horrible enough that I'm going to make it my desktop background so I can laugh at it every time I turn my computer on.

AGGGGGGHHHHHH!
Or words to that effect. I fear I may be forced to do the unthinkable and buy a game with an ugly cover.

You should (not) make a poll about redrawing this boxcover.
I hope the game has a different or at least better graphics.

No way. Just no way. One half of your statement might make sense, but both of those things cannot simultaneously be true. Look closer.

The darker grayish one with the foot in the snow matches the dog on the right. There are the correct numbers of legs.
Front dog has two feet in the air and then the two back whitish legs.
It may look a bit awkward.

And before anyone says "Do it better" I say I think I could make a painting like this. It wouldn't look much worse but I cannot draw better.
But then I would ask a graphic artist to create a better pic. If I didn't, I would expect the publisher to ask an artist. Otherwise we would cut the sales of a potentially great game and no one wants that.

Oh, it seems one of my comments were lost. I wrote Re: the leg problem - it took quite some time to see which leg belongs to which dog. But as soon as I could see it it was also clear that these dogs were (loosely) based on different photos of dogs and the two dogs are located rather poorly relatively to each other in space.
That's why I wrote in my original post

Yes, I saw that the game's Swedish predecessor already had the same box cover. Its rather unfortunate. But that was a relatively small and local market. Rio Grande should have tried harder than that.

One of two things must be true: either the center dog has five legs, or it has two hind legs on the left, and none on the right.

DNA Altering Alien Lifeform that's taken over several dogs and possibly an old guy too who is either in the midst of transforming his face or suffering a stroke? Check!

I think the artist painted this shortly after watching John Carpenter's The Thing. In which case that's probably a drunk MacReady coming up from the rear to to take care of business. I'm liking this game already!

The stylistic similarities abound:

And, of course, apologies to the artist. We are not condeming whoever sketched this. It is obviously a rough draft - a work in progress of sorts. Nay - we are simply critiquing it so that Rio Grande doesn't rush this to production before you have finished up your fine start.

As long as we are critiquing - does the old man (the one with the left side of his face melting off) does he really need to be wearing a pink coat with purple pants? I mean, I get the whole metro thing, but...really?

Not if you have a 3-legged dog to balance it out.

But just for comparison, it's not too hard to track down the originals. For example, here are the stars of the show:

well done! it is always nice to see the originals of these pictures. proves realism is not always the right way to go in illustration.

The biggest problem with the illustration is not that it's based on a real picture, but the hell-dog teeth that were added. Not that there aren't other problems with the illustration (strange little details here and there) but since it's (presumably) supposed to be 'realistic' looking, the teeth pushes it into fantasy/horror thus making it horribly disjointed.

The darker grayish one with the foot in the snow matches the dog on the right. There are the correct numbers of legs.
Front dog has two feet in the air and then the two back whitish legs.
It may look a bit awkward.

No may about it, man, at least one of those dogs has a dislocated leg!

One of two things must be true: either the center dog has five legs, or it has two hind legs on the left, and none on the right.

Looking at the source photograph, the 5th leg seems to be for another dog behind the front two (ie. the counterpart to the pair behind them) which cannot be seen except for his one leg.

What a pity, Paul Laane did a great work in Toscana (in that case, he's also the game designer):

I think Paul is better at humouristic art than at realistic.

But remember, don't judge a game by its cover! Goa has also an horrible cover but the game is great!

I agree - not every caricature artist is great in photorealistic drawing... I liked Toscana's artwork and I'm a bit sad to learn it's by the same artist.
And of course I don't want to judge any game by its cover - But it makes me sad that I know many potential buyers will.

I think you are right. This post is the first I've heard of this game and the cover really does not make me want to learn more. Even more so than the picture, I dislike the choice of font for the game title. If the picture was better, I probably would not notice the font choice, but now it is bugging me for some reason. Must... fight.... first impressions... not... sure... if ... I will be able to do so and check the game out.

I wonder how close it resembles the Runebound (second edition) travelling mechanism.

as for the picture -eek! Not the family game I would expect to be dice-driven.

"No, Timmy. The Wolf Hound is not going to attack you tonight. It is just a game."

As for the two in the front stumbling into each other within a few seconds, I think the one is mugging for the camera.

Wiping tears from my eyes as I type, and my abdominal muscles are beginning to hurt. If I could read a thread like this every day, I would have a six-pack to be envied by all.

After this, not only am I looking forward to buying the game because I like the theme, but I would be highly disappointed to find it with any other cover.

Thread of the Year so far in my book. Just hysterical.

Oh my! The original is even stranger! The dodgy cover doesn't have the third dog with a dogs-head-growth on it's rear.
