Played 1830 for the first time weds night. That was pretty sweet. I see how my tunnel vision cost me again though.

Instead of branching out and picking up shares in multiple companies i held fast to just one, picked up several in it and built it out as best i could.

I wasn't until later that i realized i needed to pick up several companies and let all their tracks combine with dual cities and the like.

I got into new york though, so that was good at least, but it eventually made it to a 4 circle city and thus everyone else made it there as well.

I might not mind losing as much if my score was close to those above me, but it is usually, or at least lately, been quite low.

I did well at transamerica, but it isn't very similar to the 18xx train games from what I know and have seen.

I do like the rules setup and the lack of dice in several of these games, and the very little if at ALL amount of luck base. Which is a double sided blade, it means that my failures are purely of my own creation and not a bad die roll vs someone else having a good die roll.

No need to beat yourself up. 1830 takes at least one "learning game" before you can really start to see the strategies.

I think I've played 1830 a dozen times or so, including PBEM games... and still consider myself a newbe.

Yep.

You can find it in most abandonware sites.

The AI is pretty good so, apart from the terrible visual experience, it's well worth it.
