Gaming Diary

We do do quite a bit of gaming through the week. And all we get at the end of it is me posting a Play. So I though I'd set this up and then I can add any kind of detail and discussion I wish.

This week has seen quite a few heroes grace our table. Thanks to the UK Math Trade, I've had some NEW games to play

Thunderstone

After massively enjoying Dominion, I had looked at this as a potential purchase with the £'s that Santa gave me, but thought I'd give Ascension a try instead as it looked sufficiently different to Dominion to give a completely different experience. We really enjoyed that too. But I still held a desire to own this one day. And that day came last weekend. Pre-sleeved too .

After one play, I'm convinced we'll enjoy this more given repeated plays. The Light / Darkness rules are somewhat intrusive, but I'm sure well get them down after a couple more plays. Until we have to introduce new players to it that is :/

Marvel Heroes

I'd picked this in my wants lists purely as speculation, not expecting to get hold of it. But hey, sometimes you get lucky! We've played two games of this so far:

X-Men vs Marvel Knights - Born Again Scenario

My X-Men took an early lead going after some of the bigger hitting headlines. Kel's Knights remained just in my shadow for the rest of the game until the final round. My lead putting me up against Magneto in each headline eventually took it's toll and he got all his Master Plans into play on the turn I made 15 points, wounding the mighty Wolverine in the process. The 5 point hit took me behind the Knights who went on to win 16-13.

Avengers vs Fantastic 4 - Born Again Scenario

A closer game throughout. F4 made the early push, going for a Threat 3 Mastermind headline first off with Sue and Torch Ready and Thing in support, hoping that Kel's success with Master Plans in the first game would tempt into it this one. It did and Doom went down, giving the F4 their Temporary Recruit Power-Up. In the second round, F4 stayed fairly low-key, allowing the Avengers to creep marginally ahead in the VP stakes. Third turn was the last. A Mastermind headline each (F4 through choice, Avengers through VP lead) left Doom with a headache, F4 with an Improved Lab, Avengers lying wounded thanks to Juggernaut's intervention. After the dust settled, F4 won 16-15.

Really enjoying this much maligned game, although many thanks must go to Universal Head for his superb summary, which makes learning the rules SO much easier.

very encouraging to hear good things said about Marvel Heroes. I had it pre-ordered months before it came out and shelved it when it arrived waiting for a "special occasion" as I was sure my boys would love it. I ended up reading a few too many criticisms before we got to it, and now years later I've yet to break its shrink-wrap. I might have to do something about that soon..

I'd like to have a go at Marvel Heroes. I've seen it on shelves but despite my liking of things superhero (Champions RPG, comics) haven't bought it. I'd like to try before I buy.

I'm organising a mini-con at Telford (Shifnal) on Saturday 9th April which is just down the road from you. It would be great if I could get a game of it then if you fancy coming down for the day.

Cheers

Steve

Marvel Heroes

My girlfriend bought me this for a birthday years ago. I didn't even know it existed at the time, so was really pleased. Upon playing it, I quickly became disappointed. Not because it is bad but because so much of it is good that the bits which let it down, REALLY let it down.

There is so much potential to this game and it just misses the mark enough to be irritating. I've since cooked up a whole load of homebrew cards and rules which attempt to set it right. They mostly work but they are patches on what is basically a bad job.

You should definitely give it a blast, just to make your own mind up.

Thunderstone

I played a friend's copy of Dominion and, as an old skool CCG player, immediately fell in love with it. So much so that I went out and bought Dominion, Intrigue and Seaside.

After playing it a few times, giving it a break and then coming back to it, I've decided that it isn't that great a game. It is ground breaking in its approach but I find it flavourless (which is a huge turn off for me with games) and repetitive.

Now there are scores of gamers going "Dominion? Repetitive?!" I say to them that the basic model of game play IS repetitive and the variety in cards is an illusion.

YMMV of course.

I noticed a lot of adverts for Thunderstone: Dragonspire, so investigated what exactly Thunderstone was. Lo and behold, it was another build-a-deck game (I don't like the term "Closed Draft" because I don't think that accurately describes the game style) but this one dripping with theme. I read some reviews and it looked interesting, so I traded my copy of Seaside for a copy of base Thunderstone.

I've yet to play it but at this stage, it is looking really good.
