iOS News: Tikal Gets Game Center Async!

• Codito Updates Tikal With Game Center Async - January 31
As promised, Codito/Sage Board Games has updated Tikal (iOS Universal) to version 1.2 by replacing Open Feint's asynchronous online multiplayer feature with Apple's much ballyhooed Game Center support for asynchronous online multiplayer. The move has been desired almost since iOS 5's release. Additionally, "undo" is now supported in online games and it appears there are some other various goodies too. So Tikal owners, it would seem to be a good time to dig up your Tikal app, give it a whirl and let us know how it goes. For prospective newcomers, Codito has thrown in a price drop from $3.99 to $2.99 as well. Here are the official notes from Codito:

Quote:
What's new

Online
======
Replaced OpenFeint with GameCenter for turn-based online multiplayer.
Up to 4 players may play online, or 2 or 3 players may play with possible AI opponents. "Undo" is also now supported in online games.

NOTE: online games now require iOS 5.0 or later.

Improvements
============
Replaced OpenFeint with GameCenter for achievements and leaderboards.
Significant improvements to the AI.
Restored option to turn off confirmation messages.
Added "Last Moves" log.

Fixes
=====
Fixed bugs with worker/leader selection.
Fixed bug with stats that could cause loading and undo to take a long time.
Fixed bug that allowed invalid last tile placement.

"...a BIG update to another app..."

What? You're just going to leave us hanging like that?

If we guess it, can you confirm?

Cities and Knights?

It seems a little soon to be making a big update to Caylus. It was only released a few weeks ago.

Is there a good tutorial for Tikal in the app? I'm getting an iPad when my income tax comes in and Tikal was on the list of games to maybe buy. Problem is I've never played it before, so I'd need a good tutorial through the app.

Thanks in advance.

This sucks for us holding on with our iPod Touch 2G devices! I paid for a game that had online play, and with this update I no longer have that option.

Well, online with Game Center right?

Yeah, that does kind of suck. But then so did the previous online play.

I just bought this yesterday, having never played before. There is a basic in-game guide that leads you through a round or two and a hint system that lets you know what your options are and why a particular move doesn't work, but not a full tutorial. After skimming the rules I lost to one AI player by only four points, but it's a pretty simple game and I'm confident I'll win my next attempt.

It's not very complex, you will learn fast. However, Tikal was a big disappointment for me. The interface is cluttered and outright ugly. This could be acceptable if the loaiding times weren't so extremely slow. It ruins the pace and the fun.

I would advice you to buy another iPad game. Neuroshima Hex and Small World are excellent games.

Agreed, big-time. Tikal is my biggest iOS boardgaming disappointment to date. I stopped even bothering to sync it long ago.
