So we ended up playing my alpha set up of a game and the other two...more later. It's 1139 am and I've had no sleep. Plus updating from a cell phone sucks.

Taj was going well, had the 1-6 elephants and felt good, then it all went down hill. I think the orange +2 VP card is OP. Maybe it should be +1?

Homesteaders was weird this time. We all felt it, maybe it is because we knew this rules better. But it for sure went WAY down on the play again list. Shrug. soblue

The alpha test...yeah...had promise but fell apart. Going to scrap it and maybe go back to the first design. Or may start on a new project.

I just did my first alpha test on a game design, as well. In my head, it seemed rock solid. We played and it went well, actually, but we (my game group) came up with four or five game tweaks/changes. That surprised me. But, that is why you have to play test, I guess.

Hopefully, you don't need to scrap but perhaps change it up.

I think i'm trying to add to many "types" at once.

one idea was a pick up and drop off goods, then i decide to add rails KIND of like a mix between ticket to ride and 18xx, when that failed i thought about making the rail system like carcassonne, OH and at some point the goods system started looking like stone age.

yeah..."What the hell?" right?

This is all on top of a card game i have been playing with in my mind (for like 15 years) and some kind of action game. So they all start to blend together.

I think I need to sit back and just realize there are plenty of good games out there and me adding or not adding one more really won't make that big of a change in the cosmos that is board gaming.

Btw, what soured you guys on Homesteaders? I found the later games to be more interesting, with much higher loan counts and auction prices.

Yeah they said the same thing. It went really fast, and just didn't seem like we played anything. We really don't know what happened. The first time we played, granted we were learning the rules, it took a while longer and we really liked it.

This time it just "happened".

The thing about the +2 VP card in Taj is that it compels you to play a card every round. Sometimes it's better to withdraw early in order to get the extra card and a better pick of the available cards. Then you're better prepared for the important battles down the road.

without fail, each time we have played, the person that had the +2 the longest...won because of it. and its a white card, so its not like you are missing anything by being compelled to play it. you just pop it down with your normal play.

(A) I think it is important to remember the person with the +2 white card was also pursuing other avenues of obtaining points. (B) I believe your sample size of plays (and players) is far to small to make that determination. (C) I'm pretty sure I've won once due mostly to chains (despite having the white card).
