• Words with Friends updates February 1 & December 29
Latest updates to Words with Friends include
Quote:

What's in this version:
The Count is now available in the Words with Friends Store!
Tons of improvements to performance and stability!
Loads of bug fixes!
We’ve got more great features on the way, so let us know what you’d like to see next!

Did you notice the part about the Words with Friends Store?
That was the update on December 29th that added the ability to buy enhancements to your Words with Friends games. One enhancement is the ability to block ads, but more controversial by some commentators is the ability to buy features to give advantages that your opponent does not get. One is Tile Pile, which tells you quantities of letters remaining. The Count, tells you the score of your words as you put them down, and before you submit. Lastly, Word-o-Meter tells you a strength of your word compared to other ones you could make with your rack. Yes, a player could always figure these type of items by other means, but what do you think about buying these type of advantages?

Companies from some countries (like ours, from Poland) are not allowed to sell on Android Market (yes, it sucks). That's why some need another company to sell their products.

Andriod != iOS

As of now you have 14 thumbs for this comment which I find amusing. As has been recently discussed (and probably discussed every time something for Android gets posted), some time ago the admins decided that it was not worth having a different category for Android and other mobile platforms so they decided to lump everything under the existing iOS forum.

As this continues to play out, it seems like a bad decision. Currently there are several side effects that are undesirable.

1. Android users have to sift through 95% iOS posts to find the 5% that are Android related. (This was expected.)

2. iOS users have the 5% of posts that they have to ignore. (This was also expected.)

3. Information gets lost when Android related news or info gets posted to an entry titled with iOS. (This happened recently when Hey, That's My Fish was on sale and it was posted as an iOS new item but someone mentioned in the comments that it was also on sale for Android. I believe this is an unintended side effect.)

4. New users who expect iOS news are surprised and disappointed when non-iOS news gets posted. (This should have been expected since users join at arbitrary times and are not likely to be aware of the original decisions that were made in a thread long, long ago.)

5. New users who want Android news do not know what to subscribe to. (This is the worst side effect that should have been anticipated. Basically it is not very discoverable to have a forum name iOS have double or triple duty for platforms that are not in the name.)

In a nutshell this points toward the idea that the forum needs to be more broadly named to something like "Mobile Gaming" or that different forums need to exist for different platforms (Or at least iOS and Other).

I get the feeling I should bookmark this post since I anticipate this coming up every time an Android post is made.

tl;dr: The admins did this intentionally. Make them fix it.

As an Android user that is thoroughly SICK of having to sift through all of the iOS posts just to find the news about things that are applicable to my phone/mobile OS of choice, believe me when I say the sentiments are just as strong from the Android side of the fence too.

Seriously, when are the BGG news Powers That Be / Admins going to realize that the call to keep them both under she same "iOS" heading was a mistake and fix this? Even if you're not willing to split the iOS and Android categories, can you at least consider renaming the "iOS Board Games" to something more neutral like "mobile OS gaming", and letting the posting parties subtitle it according to mobile platform. Android and iOS are no more the same than Windows and Mac, and the apps are not cross compatible.

They just need to change the topic to "Mobile games" and then start with "Android", "iOS", or whatever other platform the games are for. Seriously.

The current categorization treats iOS like Kleenex, which it is not. More software is coming out for other platforms, and it's disingenuous to do it any other way.

I'm interesting in both iOS and android posts now that I have an ipad2 and a droid2, but I can definitely see the value in separating the posts into completely different feeds that people could subscribe to. I'd subscribe to both, most people would only subscribe to one or the other.

Also, thanks for including the QR codes, those are incredibly handy. ^__^

Some of OpenFeint's features mirror those in iOS's Gamecenter, with the benefit of being cross platform. On games that use services like this well, achievements and scores can be tied to the player and not the device. Depending on how the developer implements it, that could be seen as a feature.

It is great there are more than one way to load apps. I use the QR codes often to share a quick link to the app from phone to phone.

Doesn't look like it... Anything official from them only seems to mention "game", not "games"

My guess is that they will see how well it sells.

I've used games with OpenFeint on both platforms. When it wasn't getting in the way with requests to sign up, it was causing stability issues with the app itself. The theory of a cross-app utility is a noble one. The reality has left me wanting.

The reality is that Microsoft and Valve have perfected this. Openfeint and Game Center pale in comparison to Xbox Live and Steam. And the latter is multi-platform too! (PC, Mac, and there's an Android app that covers the social interaction part of it, probably one for iOS too). Xbox Live works on Xbox, Windows Phone, and sort of on Windows, but it pales on the PC compared to Steam, which is so superior to everything else that it's a joke.

I recently purchased Neuroshima Hex! for my iTouch. It's great, but buggy as heck? Is this going to be addresses by the developer?

Yes, there's few problems with iPhone 3G / iPod Touch 2G devices. We're currently working on the update with those fixed and online multiplayer added.

I've seen kickstarter projects started by fans for artists that are outside the US. Maybe someone trustworthy can be found (like BGG staff?) to submit foreign apps to the Android and Amazon app markets.
