I never thought that one person could have so many different occupations. And being a thief and a monk? Seems a little odd. Well that is exactly what are meeple friends are in the classic game Carcassonne from Rio Grande Games. Even though the game is only ten years old, I consider it a classic in the modern board gaming genre. It has won countless awards including the big one, The Spiel des Jahres. This modern classic always stays fresh and is always ready to hit the table.

Carcassonne is by far Mrs. Games with Two's favorite game. She loves to play this one. If it was up to her this is the only game that we would play. Although she often loses because of her lack of crops (no farmland). She usually holds her own and takes a more Pius approach to the game (she loves monasteries). The overall ease of game play and the ability to block your opponent with the right tile makes this a game that we come back to over and over again. We love that it plays great with two, and it also plays really well with five (and six if you have the Inns and Cathedrals Expansion). Although, the game starts off easy to learn and understand, you can make the game fairly complex with the endless number of expansions for the game. We currently have four of said expansions (Inns & Cathedrals; Traders & Builders; Abbey & Mayor; and Bridges, Castles, and Bazaars). Since we play this quite often I will go over the individual expansions in detail in future post; for now, just the base game, which is great all by itself.

The game stays fresh as the board changes with every play, and no two games are ever alike. A great "take that" aspect in the game, allows you take someone else's spot and leave them wishing they would have pulled your tile. Many different strategies in the game allow experienced players to continue to challenge themselves, while a luck factor allows novices to keep pace. Finally, there is a sense of accomplishment as you look at what you built together. You have made a beautiful piece of art that will never be replicated. I think that is one of the many reasons we love this game so much. Win or Lose you feel that you have created something together.

We both love this game to bits. It was one of the first Eurogames that we ever played, and it is still one of our all time favorites. The components are great and the price is great at about $30 at your Friendly Local Game Store. We can't sing the Carcassonne praises enough, and we will continue to as we expound upon the many expansions. This game made Meeples who they are today. So if you don't have this one in your collection, you should consider picking it up, or try one of it's many incarnations and expansions, if you already own it.

This is my wife's favorite as well. In fact, it's the only game she'll ask to play.

My wife loves this one too. We tried Carcassonne New World and it fell flat for us. However, the base game is a hit. We also love Dominion. So you may want to see if she will enjoy that one. And I just picked up Alahambra. I believe it has a similar feel to Carcassonne in the sense that they are both tile laying games. Hoping to get some plays in this weekend, then you can here about the experience with this one. Thanks for reading hope you are enjoying the post.
