• Designer Wolfgang Kramer is interviewed for ZDF tivi, which I believe is a German children's television show, on how he does what he does – i.e., design games that go on to win awards like Spiel des Jahres. Note the wall filled with Kramer-designed and co-designed titles behind him. Inspiration for newbie designers – or intimidation. Take your pick...

• Gamer Alan Gerding proposes to girlfriend and fellow gamer Crystol Shelton with a little help from Ascension and the guys at Gary Games.

• Barbara Schmidts, editor at German publisher Kosmos, is interviewed (in German) on Brettspielblog.ch. Schmidt said that the company sifts through 600-800 ideas each year, most of them unsolicited; that number is comparable to the thousand concepts that AMIGO Spiel reviews annually, as mentioned in this BGG News item. That's a whole lotta rejection going on there. (And I'm sure someone will chime in to say, "But not nearly enough!")

• German publisher Schmidt Spiele has sold more than 350,000 copies of the 2012 Spiel des Jahres winner Qwirkle, according to press release site Brandora. Sales for the Schmidt game line – which includes both old-school game lines like Ligretto, Yahtzee and Ludo, along with modern children's line Drei Magier Spiele and strategy game line Hans im Glück – reached €34 million in 2011, up from €31.1 million in 2010.

• Hanno Girke of Lookout Games notes on BGG that a reprint of Le Havre, in both German and English, should be finished at the manufacturer "any day now".

• The Omaha (Nebraska) World-Herald profiled regular gamer guy Kaleb Michaud, owner of 1,500+ games.

• Another way to pimp your Settlers of Catan on Kickstarter: fancy plastic medieval settlements and cities that have notches in them for the wooden roads – giant notches when compared to the scale of the houses, but perhaps they pull super-wide hay carts in Catan. (HT: Phil Alberg)

• Pull quote: "[A]t a time when plenty of indie filmmakers with excellent ideas struggle to get financing for their films, Universal has paid millions of dollars not to make movies about board games." More details on how Universal got out of its deal with Hasbro for the movie rights to several board game titles on Cinema Blend.

• And in other Hasbro licensing news, this time going in the other direction, CNET reports that Hasbro has signed a deal with Zynga to create games and toys based on its online properties, which include FarmVille. Some Eric who is not me has commented on that news item about Agricola being a nice stand-in for FarmVille: The Board Game. (HT: Dave Kohr)

Great news on the Le Havre reprint. I've been waiting and have resisted paying premium prices in auctions or in the Marketplace. According to that thread linked above the reprint will include the Le Grand Hameau expansion as well. Bonus!

Looking forward to the Le Havre reprint, Hanno also added this:

"Yes, expansion will be included. And street date Europe (shipping to US hopefully the same day) will be Feb 28th."

If I'm *really* lucky, Vinhos will arrive by then too and I can order them together

Thanks for gathering these nuggets.

I am reminded of the unique cards M:TG creator Richard Garfield has had made:
http://magiccards.info/uqc/en/3.html
http://magiccards.info/uqc/en/4.html
http://magiccards.info/uqc/en/5.html

I think that was great that the guys at Gary Games did that. Unfortunately however for Alan---since his cards are not Magic: The Gathering cards---he may not be able to tap that on his wedding night without Hasbro's permission, because of the whole trademark issue.

Cool. We watched the Kramer interview on T.V. the other night. My 7 year old daughter was fascinated with the concept that people actually sit down and design the games we play.

The first news I got this morning was of the protest clash in Greece, followed up by the explosions in Aleppo. But between this proposal video and the one of the guy shooting his daughter's laptop with a .45, I'm in OK shape for the day now. Optimism restored.

Eric taught me Le Havre. I liked it at first, then disliked it, and now like it again. Neat that it will be printed again - should I get the urge to add more Uwe to my collection I will be able to afford it

Talk about irony that Hasbro is now getting $millions to not have movies made, but after seeing the trailer to Battleship, I have to wonder what exactly Universal was thinking when they made that deal. It's like it reads from an Onion article!

Wait, what? A parent shooting something to teach a child a lesson inspires optimism?

It was hilarious, and I am in no way, shape or form a 2nd Amendment guy. He shoots it with hollow points and then tells her on camera that he's going to get her to reimburse him for them since they're a dollar each. It was just... it is not possible to make something up like that.

Wasn't the story something like he had to play three games to get the chance to play that proposal card because she kept kicking his ass with a mean speed deck?

Good times.

Congrats on the proposal, very well done!

I wonder if I ever get a divorce if Gary Games will make me a special card in lieu of serving papers? Something along the lines of "You are forever banished to the void." Of course she would probably follow up with the specially made "take all your opponent's runes" card. I kid of course.

Wolfgang Kramer is amazing. I'm still slowly making my way through his games, both popular and obscure. I finally had the opportunity to play Princes of Florence a few weeks ago for the first time--obviously a forerunner of so many games since that time, but still holding it's own.

And this weekend I was able to play back-to-back games of Viva Pamplona! We had such a hilarious time with it, and wish that more of the the newer Euros were as interactive as this one. Who knew Kramer could do "take that" so well!

"The Wall" is a testament to Kramer's skill in designing an incredibly diverse array of games. Intimidated? I'd just have to say, "We're not worthy!"
