Expansions, Part 1: Sweet merciful crap, we have a lot of expansions

According to my profile, out of 262 owned games in me and my wife's collection, a whopping 104 are actually board game expansions. That's almost 40% of me and my wife's collection.

This is the first blog entry in a series I'm hoping to do about expansions. Some of the topics I'm planning to cover include:

*my favorite expansions;
*what I consider to be the least essential expansions;
*my favorite games that, in my opinion, don't need expansions;
*me and my wife's opinions on expansions in general (spoiler alert: they're different)

For now, let's take a look at the main offenders. Note that this doesn't include every game we own that has a lot of expansions: these are simply the ones that we've either collected obsessively or that have gotten out of control quickly.

HeroScape - just...HeroScape. I got into this game shortly before Wave 3 was revealed, and by then I was already obsessively visiting Targets, Wal-Marts and Toys'R Us looking for figures, in many cases duplicates so I could field decent armies of commons. I stuck with it, and am only missing the Flagbearers and the Ticalla Jungle sets. (I opted out of both Marvel and the D&D stuff. That's not why I got into this game.) I'm only disappointed about the end of the line because I never did get my jungle terrain. I haven't given up hope, though.

Carcassonne - our "gateway" Euro game. When we were getting started, we bought the Carcassonne bundle (from our then-favorite online store, Newspiel) containing Inns & Cathedrals and Traders & Builders. Over the years, we gradually added the rest of the series and also bought every other version of the game while we were at it. We even bought the Catapult. We seem to have actually hit the wall with this one, though: we ended up passing on Wheel of Fortune and weren't even curious about Bridges, Castles & Bazaars. These days, when we're in a Carcassonne mood, I'm more likely to suggest Hunters & Gatherers or The City.

Dominion - we have everything currently available except for Prosperity: we've barely touched Seaside and have barely looked at Alchemy. Both Gretchen and I love this game, as do all of our friends, and it's currently the one game that Gretchen is 100% behind getting expansions for. I suspect we'll own the entire series eventually, but we're slowing down until we've played what we have.

Arkham Horror - this one's fairly daunting, because although we own over half of the currently available expansions, the only big box expansion we have is Dunwich, and Miskatonic is looming on the horizon. We have friends who also collect AH gear, so we'll probably get everything eventually, but as with Dominion, we're pacing ourselves.

Memoir '44 - Currently, the Commands and Colors family occupies the #1 spot on my Top 10, and this is by far the one I've played the most, so Memoir '44 might just be my favorite game. I've gone crazy buying all of the expansions for this one, encouraged by the fact that Days of Wonder has shifted towards making M'44 more of a "system," where there are a lot of expansions that are dependent upon each other. I can see where this would be annoying to some, but I'm loving it. In fact, I'd be more annoyed if each expansion were a standalone product, and basically written as if none of the other expansions existed.

BattleLore - here's where things get really stupid. We've played BattleLore twice. When I finally decided to buy into this game, Mayday Games was running a clearance sale, and I was able to get the Epic and Call to Arms expansions for about $15 total. Then we found several OOP expansions at a game store in Ames and bought them on general principle. Still need to get this one back to the table, because we haven't even played with the War Council or any of that stuff.

Power Grid - our most recent obsession: we received this as a Secret Santa gift, along with the New Power Plant Cards and the China/Korea board. Since we now had four maps and two full sets of power plants, I declared that we had more than enough PG stuff to last us for a good long while. (I think you see where this is going.) A mere couple of weeks later, Gretchen was at a game store in Des Moines, a dangerous situation because we always try to buy something, and she left with the France/Italy board. Then, we decided that if we were going to have all of these maps, we might as well have a box to put them in, so we ended up getting Brazil/Spain & Portugal as well. We should probably play PG sometime soon.

Part 2 of this series will be along...eventually. For now, what games do you own that you've obsessively bought expansions for?

Well, I am no stranger to expansions. I am usually very quick on the draw to buy expansions.

Full list of expansions:
Alhambra: Big Box - Only played through the modules of the first expansion so far
Arkham Horror - All expansions plus themed dice
Bang! The Bullet! - Plus Wild West Show
Battlestar Galactica - Both expansions
Carcassonne - All base game expansions, plus H&G, Discovery, and New World
Chrononauts: The Gore Years - I don't own the base game yet
Defenders of the Realm - Barbarian and Dragon Expansion
Dominion - All expansions except Stash
Nightmare - 2 and 3
Pandemic - OTB
PitchCar - All expansions plus extra stunt pack
Power Grid - All maps and new power plant deck, plus I made a display board for the auctions
The Settlers of Catan - Seafarers and 5-6 player extension to the base
Shadows over Camelot - Merlin
Small World - Everything, and I'm not even a big fan of the game
Ticket to Ride - 1910 cards

Avoid These:
Bang! High Noon and Bang! A Fistful of Cards: These were interesting, but I feel they got in the way of the gameplay
New World: A Carcassonne Game and Carcassonne: Catapult: New World took away any sort of thinking ahead and catapult is just ridiculous
Chrononauts: The Gore Years: Awful, does not blend with the base at all
Dominion: Alchemy: Not a fun addition
The Settlers of Catan: 5-6 Player Extension: This game is great with 4, no need to add more people

Must Buys:
Arkham Horror: at least one of the big boxes probably Dunwich
Carcassonne: Inns & Cathedrals: Adds the 6th player and alters scoring just a bit
Dominion: Prosperity: Best addition to the game, more money, bigger VPs
Pandemic: On the Brink: More roles, more specials, Mutation and Virulent, MUST BUY
PitchCar Extension: Every track needs jumps
Ticket to Ride: USA 1910: Big cards, more destinations

If I could only buy one of these expansions it would be Pandemic: On the Brink

Tony, I appreciated this blog. I caught the M44 bug too, buying three expansions right out of the gate. Unfortunately, I haven't played any of the expansions yet, since getting someone interested to play has been a challenge... but I'm optimistic (1 scenario to go and I'm on to Easter Front).

My wife and I have 4 of the Carcassonne expansions and I think we will hold where we are as it suffices for the amount of play time it gets now as the collection gradually expands.

I don't have any expansions for PG, but I can see this being a struggle in the future once I get more people addicted. I am looking at asking for Railways of the World for my birthday and see collecting its maps being a similar temptation.

Nice topic. I look forward to future blogs.

meeple Keep playing (expansions)...

I've bought everything for:

Small World - I've bought everything for Small World, and I've even created a few custom races and powers. The good thing about most of teh expansions are that they don't introduce any new rules, so you don't even have to tell new players that theyr are actually playing with 3 expansions. But Necromancer's Island and Tales & Legends are not very likely to ever hit the table again. NI I have only played once, and didn't like it at all. T&L I've played a few times, and I honestly thing it more trouble than it's worth.

Zooloretto & Aquaretto - Again I've bought everything that available, and printed the rest from the designers homepage. I've also been able to get hold of some of the postcard edition of the expansions. But I've only played the games 33 times on their own, and then 8 games with expansions, which is not nearly enough to play all the expansions, since you should at most play two at a time.

Memoir'44 - So far I've not got the Campaign Book Volume 1, and I've promised not to buy it before I've played all the scenarios at least once, which leaves something like 100+ plays.

And they are just the games that comes to my mind without thinking about it... Actyall thinking about it and Shadowrun, WH40K 2E, Fusion, Blood Bowl 2E, Talisman 2E and Space Hulk 2E springs to mind... and there are proberly some that I have forgotten.

We got Monopoly Get Out of Jail Mini Game and Monopoly Free Parking Mini Game to expand our Monopoly: Family Game Night Championship Edition game.

So now our game...

has the Speed Die...

and the Trophy...

and two cool mini-games...

And, while not expansions, we also ended up getting Monopoly: Star Wars Limited Collector's Edition and Monopoly: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Edition.

For a while there I was buying expansions for games that had never made it to the table.

The only major offender at this point is Space Alert, which I dearly want to play, and have the New Frontier expansion for if I ever *do* get to play it.

Significantly disagree. My only quibble with Alchemy is that it feels incomplete (like half an expansion - as though there should be more cards that use the potion in some way). This does make me worry about the upcoming Dominion: Cornucopia. I would agree that you could make Alchemy your last Dominion addition (of what's been released so far) and not be worse for it.

To must buys I might add:
Kingsburg: To Forge a Realm: Bunch of mini-expansion that all work together well (and you can pick and choose as much as you like); 1 option changes the King's Aid to make military matter more.
The Pillars of the Earth Expansion Set: The adaptations that make the game workable for 5 or 6 players greatly improve 4 player (and in my opinion work well for 3 player as well)
Descent: The Well of Darkness, Descent: The Altar of Despair: Adds a bunch of really good options for variety (Treachery among the best), good new monsters, new heroes, with out bogging down the game.
Saint Petersburg: New Society & Banquet Expansion: Replaces some cards to improve balance adds a touch of variety

Also I want to reiterate the Arkham Horror expansions, which work well when combined with other expansions or by themselves. Can not wait for Arkham Horror: Miskatonic Horror Expansion, and hope they come out with more (with more investigators, heralds, guardians and Ancient Ones - anything else would like be just bonus).

We own the Bullet as well, but have yet to play with either of these additions. We're not in a hurry to: Bang! doesn't really need more randomness. I don't even know what Wild West Show is: I'll have to look for that.

Agreed 100%, and we haven't even played Mutation, Virulent Strain or Bio-Terrorist yet. The new role cards and special events alone are worth the price of admission.

We also own every Small World expansion. The 3 race expansions are, like you said, essential. We've played one T&L game and it was okay, but not great. I imagine we'll keep using it. We probably won't bother with Necromancer Island unless we have 6 people. The Leaders expansion, on the other hand, is completely unnecessary. There are some homebrew rules here on BGG that might be worth checking out.

Agreed, this is a wonderful expansion. We always play with the new Province sheets now, and we usually play with the alternate building rows and soldier tokens. The latter are the most recent element we've introduced and we were surprised at how much we like them. We still have yet to try the Governor or Event cards. (They're not called Event cards in the rules, but I can't remember their proper name right now.)

I'm normally big on expansions for games I love. To me they extend the table life of the game alot. That said, there are certain games that for me are just iffy, so-so, or perhaps not even viable WITHOUT the expantions.

Notable examples are:

Mare Nostrum: Where the basic game is ok, kinda civ-lite, but the expansion, with Gods and powers, monsters, extra hero and building cards is exceptional. Expecially if you can find a 6th player, but still is great with 4 or 5.

World of Warcraft, the Boardgame: ok, but kinda "clunky" without the first expansion. Pretty fun game with it, if a little on the long side (for the weight of the game play to me). But I'd never play it without the first expansion.

Tony, if it weren't for Vassal, I would be close to the same boat as you (perhaps mine would at least have a sail...) when it comes to having more expansions than plays of BattleLore. If you (or anyone else reading) are up for it (though sounds like you've plenty of other games to play ), I would love to play some BL + as many expansions as one wants to cram into a single session (or even just one ) through the wonder of online board gaming.

Otherwise, maybe when I'm visiting my parents in Cedar Falls...

Good luck with the blog, looking forward to more.

Take care,
Todd
