Kickstarting the Habit

This summer as my wife and I were about ready to expect our first child we were spending much of our time indoors and playing games. When we weren't playing games we were relaxing on the couch and I was mostly browsing BGG. I happened upon the Kickstarter Geeklist and became immediately interested in all of the games and small publishers that were trying to get their games published.

At this point I have backed the following games:
1. Carnival
2. Borogove
3. DIG: The Card Game
4. Super Showdown
5. Creatures
6. Sanitarium
7. Pizza Theory
8. Lemonade Stand
9. DICEafari
10. D-Day Dice
11. Rise!

I also picked up Mirror, Mirror and Dark Horse after Kickstarter ended and those games have been fun and am still debating another Kickstarter game I missed out on, Fealty.

All of these games tend to follow our usual gaming habits of being either a card game or use dice. While I am still waiting many of these games to arrive at my door the ones that have come already have been fantastic and really enjoyable for us to play after the little one goes to sleep.

I would say without Kickstarter, I would not have had as much fun over the past few months with games than what I have had. I think our favorite game has been Carnival from the production quality to the gameplay it is nothing short of awesome. This game has ended up replacing Monopoly Deal as our go to quick game at night.

The other game we were lucky enough to get a copy of and is now up on Kickstarter is Farmageddon. The Kickstarter URL is http://kck.st/xgqAn2. This is another game that plays great with two and has incredible artwork. I will be dedicating an entire blog entry to Farmageddon later this week. For now all I can say is this is a quick playing card game that you don't want to miss out on.

I think the reason why I like Kickstarter so much is because I always feel like I am supporting a small publisher trying to get their company going and the designers are always involved with the community. It also feels good to help out the little guys and we get some entertainment out of it in a new, fun game to play!

Jim,

Thank you so much for your support of Rise! as well as for being so generous in your support of my fellow Kickstarters. It is fans like you that make this arduous journey into publishing extremely rewarding. I know you will enjoy a good deal of the games on that list as I have backed some of them as well. Stay tuned for some more great games from Crash Games on Kickstarter!

Why is it that '90% fat free' sounds so much better than '10% fat'?

Jim--

Thanks for your Kickstarter support of Pizza Theory and buying Mirror, Mirror (after the fact but as a result of Kickstarter as well). Kickstarter is a great help to our small company and allows us to help minimize the many risks of publishing by gauging the interest that there might be in small print runs of games that we might otherwise not be willing to take a chance on publishing at all.

We really appreciate your support and that of many others like you by following and backing Kickstarter projects.

Very sincerely--Rick Soued, on behalf of Eagle and Gryphon Games

Guy,

I have been following the progress of the app and am hoping to get to play it here soon to see if it's one we'd like to acquire. Your review of the game is what got me interested in it and many of my games we own have come right off your geeklist. Whether you know it or not you have given us a number of great recommendations!

Jim

This is the first place I've read someone playing two-player really. The Farmageddon BGG page has recommendations at 4 or so, even though it has a 2 player variant. IS it fun at 2 player or does it seem less dynamic with fewer players? I'm on the fence about backing it because of this; we do mostly 2-player stuff.

Hey Sara,

I'm the completely biased designer of Farmageddon. Jim should answer your question about 2 player as he's probably played the game in 2 player more than even I have (maybe). But if you have any other questions about Farmageddon please send 'em my way.

Sara,

I think the game plays fine 2 player and my wife and I do enjoy playing it as a quick filler at night after dinner. The farmer cards in the game often result in attacks against the other player so as long as you don't mind always attacking one person or being attacked by that person you should have no issue with the game. For this reason I would say it may be a little less dynamic, there is nothing more fun than blowing up the planted fields of 2 other players on your single turn.

With that said, I believe some of my 2-player testing as helped Grant balance the dynamics as I feel now there are more options in terms of benefiting your own crops in addition to hurting someone else. When I first tested this a few months ago most of the farmer cards were direct attacks on your opponent and in a 2-player game that is not going to be as fun.

Now I think there is a better 2-player balance both in terms of rules and cards to make the 2-player game play just as compelling. Thanks for reading!

Jim

I got Fealty and finally got around to playing it this past weekend. It's going to be a regular in our game group. We like that the rules are simple, the game is quick, but the strategy is fairly deep.

Well I'm about to take the leap and start an online game company that offers downloadable board games and content. Should be up and running by the end of the year. Have three game concepts in development right now. Will definitely use Kickstarter when I'm up and running with a bit of a following.

Does anyone on the blog have any tips or insights to share about using Kickstarter? Any help is much appreciated. Will post more about the games when we're closer to release.

Keep Calm, Game On!

Dave
