iOS Hot Deal: Ticket To Ride Pocket

Name: Ticket To Ride Pocket

Device: iOS iPhone

Sale Price: Free (was $1.99)

Players: 1-4

Multiplayer: Pass & Play, Local Wifi, Local Bluetooth, Online Realtime, Online Async

Seller/Developer: Days of Wonder

iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/app/ticket-to-ride-pocket/id47185798...

Release, update, price tracking info on Appshopper.com: http://appshopper.com/games/ticket-to-ride-pocket

Based on BGG Entry: Ticket to Ride

VGG Entry: Ticket to Ride

Notes: I had all but written a post proclaiming that Ticket To Ride Pocket was the new undisputed 3rd pillar in the holy triumvirate of über iOS board game titles that includes the vaunted Carcassonne and Ascension. And then Days of Wonder goes and does something that neither of those other apps have ever done. THEY SET IT TO FRIKKEN FREE!*

I had been singing the praises of this app last week in its update announcement thread. I own both the iPad app and the iPhone app, and because of the async I actually play this one more often. I just couldn't say enough great things about this tight little app. That they would make it free is simply an astounding action and a demonstration in the economics of abundance. From an industry standpoint, I think it is a very shrewd move on the part of DoW, and could very well be an amazing stroke of genius for this title, both app and print.

But don't worry about that. Simply download this free little app and play it for all it's worth, which is a lot!

* Note: This will likely only be free for one day as part of a FAAD promotion.

My iTouch 2nd generation can run Street Fighter IV with no problems at all.

But my iTouch 2nd generation cannot play TICKET TO RIDE.

Awesome.

Thanks for sharing the news.

Now that you can already find Ticket to Ride in Target and other mainstream stores, I wonder where this little clever marketing move will take it.

My guess is that revenues from the base game have tapered off to a point where its no longer significant. Giving it away lets them continue to capitalize on the DLC and continue to make gains on the marketing exposure. Good move by DOW.

As far as I know, there's no DLC for the Pocket version (or, at least not yet).

Given the way iOS handles 3D objects vs. individual instances of a sprite resource, this is both reasonable and not at all surprising. They probably could have made it work on the 2nd Gen, but it would have worsened the experience for everyone on higher end devices. Them's the brakes.

I don't think anyone can directly blame DoW for the game not working on their older devices. It needs iOS5 for game center multiplayer. iOS5 is not supported on the older devices. Not much DoW can do about that I'm guessing.

Of course, I could be wrong about the above. I've not researched it and just going from memory or what I heard back when iOS5 was released.

But I was not aware that such services gave away such cool apps. Definitely piqued my interested in FAAD.

A great idea. If you aren't doing that, then you are only denying yourself of having more potential opponents. I noticed that when an app goes free the "gift this app" link disappears. Well, at least the "Tell a friend" link still works. I sent out some myself. I'd be surprised if this app didn't kind of go "viral" in this way.

During their initial release, they said they (probably?) wouldn't be able to implement any expansions due to the constraints of the Iph's smaller screen, but then again, they also mentioned that TtR Pocket also woudln't have multi-player either, so one can still hope...

EDIT: phrased better/grammar

It never fails. I think iOS devs on the app store just wait until they see a purchase with my name go through and then say "Hey! He bought it! Now we can make it free!"

Ah well. Ticket to Ride is worth it and I want to support DoW in their iOS endeavors.

Now to spread the word!

Man, this is bull****. I paid $1 for this when it came out. What did I get out of it? I got to play it a whole two months before you guys. What a rip. I demand Days of Wonder refund my 100 pennies now, or else I'll never buy another product from them ever again!

OK, that's sarcasm. But in all seriousness, why didn't you guys buy this when it was $1? It's a dollar! You spend that much keeping a light bulb on for 4 hours during the evening. You spend 4x that on a cup of coffee at Starbucks. Come on!

Also, I can't tell if this means that it's not selling well, or there is impending paid DLC in the form of 1910, Europe, and Switzerland (hope so!)

Expansions would be nice.

Especially if a free DLC is available to anyone who bought 24 hours prior to it being free...(wishful thinking)...I'll still buy it.

Absolutely a four-star game, and for free that makes it a seventeen-star game.

The Achievements in the game, though -- holy shit. An achievement for playing 20,000 games? For reals?

Hmm, I picked it up for my iPad, yeah 2X mode, not sure I will play it, kinda of moved away from TtR, wish they, Rio Grande, would port Moon's Airlines Europe. Given away apps, or reducing prices to token is not a bad idea for a publisher on any game if they are paying the programmer, i.e. they own the code in house, I have used an app purchase just to check out a game before buying the board-game, so increase sales there? Given the choice would always want to play the hard copy over the app. Was hoping Ghost Stories would drop in price to check it out, one of those, "will I like this game?", "I don't know". Maybe they should offer a free app that plays so many turns then stops for this purpose.

I love the iPad version but on the iPhone it's unplayable. Not enough real estate.

I know everyone has their own opinions, but this strikes me as something very close to being factually incorrect. I've played over a dozen games on my iPhone just fine. The game plays perfectly, and it's very easy to see what's going on at any given time.

I've still never been able to complete one single async game where one or more person is away for entended periods of time. For example, in the similar vein of Ascension where I can have multiple games going on for an extended period of time.

I did at least complete a multiplayer game now, but both me and the other person played out the whole game in a single session.

Am I just doing it wrong? Is the game not meant to be played this way? I assumed that is what async means. That is what it means to me anyway.

Regarding real estate on the iphone. Works perfect for me.

Strange. For some reason the button for 2x mode won't appear when I install this on my iPad.

I just rechecked mine, works on first edition iPad. Try the double pushing the home button and killing the app, maybe rebooting it second action? The first 2 things I do when something acts strange. Have one app that gets hosed all the time, get this, it loses it back Icon menu button about every 1 out of 10 times, only way to clear it is to 2X Home, kill it. Seems to clear up a multitude of sin on the iPad.

Not only that, but a conclusion like that kind of pre-concludes that a LOT of yet-to-be-published iPhone apps are also going to be "unplayable" simply from the fact that they have sizeable, complex boards and components that all have to fit on the iPhone screen. Ticket To Ride is a relatively simple game from a component stand point. It's simply a board, chains of trains, and cards. Perhaps ptdnet, playing board games on an iPhone is not for you?

The game is totally playable, easily in fact on my iphone4.
That without zooming in on the board. The option Is there but I never use it. Just no need.

I had a Problem starting a game last night but other then that it's been a flawless online experience for me.

To the guy above who played in realtime. Quit the app at any point in the game come back hours later and take your move(if it is your turn that is) and voila async.

This as yet to happen or ever work for me. I've tried just leaving the game running while waiting for others, I'll come back to my phone and it gives me some cryptic message that I left the game (or something can't remember the exact text). I was playing a game last night with 3 others, it was late, about 6 turns were played and it seemed to stall. So I turned the phone off for the night and this morning I load up the game and there is no game there whatsoever.

REAL TIME OR GTFO

Nah for real, im to much of a DO IT NOW person to do a turn then come back hours later. a whole game of TTR only takes like 30 mins or less. to drag a turn out for three hours seems insane.

Thats weird, I was getting that error this weekend when trying to download Maple Story when it was free. Out of the 100s of apps I downloaded I never saw that error.

The app store is having issues across the board, had problems just downloading updates to iPad and editing a review, give it a try later.
