This week we had an impromptu game night with another couple. We had difficulty deciding what game to play, but after much discussion we landed on the classic Carcassonne. Part of the reasoning for this selection was that the other couple is looking to purchase a game that they can play with their family. We chose to play the base game of Carcassonne; using the tiles from the expansions, but refrained from using any of the additional rules (one of the many great features of the game). This round was a battle for farmland. Our friends were in a battle for a large piece of farmland for most of the game. In the meantime, Mrs. Game With Two was quietly building cities and monasteries for most of the game; slowly gaining points. The rest of us were so focused on obtaining the largest farm, that we threw every other strategy out the window. In the end, the game was very close with Mrs. GWT coming away with a narrow victory.
This game again proved it's depth and accessibility to new players once again. It also showed that this is still a great game with two players, four players, or six players. We had a great time with this one, and I think we have converted another couple to the wonderful world of Carcassonne. After many plays we still love this one, and love to bring it out at least once a month. Carcassonne brings something new every time we play it. Whether it be the latest expansion or a new strategy that we did not consider. It's always fresh, no matter how many times it comes to the table. Always a great game and has continued to be great.
