A dozen roses for her. A dozen games for me. I think I'm getting the best end of that deal... :-)
Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation - Deluxe Edition I'm enjoying bringing back these games that I used to play a lot, but which haven't hit the table for a while. In this one, the Fellowship and the Sauron player each have nine characters that they advance and battle with. As in Stratego, the characters are hidden from the opponent until first engaged. Each character has his own unique ability and each player also has a hand of strategy cards that are used in combat. There's lots of room for clever tactics and the game also has variants that keep it fresh on repeated playings. I played Sauron in this one and our game came down to a 50/50 guess as to where Frodo was. I guessed wrong.
Urban Sprawl Four of us got in another round of this excellent city-building game. I didn't score my first Prestige point until the leaders were already over 25 points. Amazingly, I was able to not only come all the way back, but pull away to a commanding win. In this one, it's not necessarily the player who gets off to a fast start, but the one who sets himself up the best to get the most out of the strong cards in the Metropolis deck. That keeps everybody in the game all the way.
Eclipse I managed to score a copy of this red-hot new game from BGG Marketplace and we had a "try it out" session today. We started with four players, but ended up playing with two of us when the other two had to go for another game that they had been waiting to start. The game still played quite well and we were quickly into the myriad of options the game provides. I got stymied at the beginning by running into three early hexes that were all guarded by Ancient Ships. I had to spend several turns only being able to afford two Actions while trying to build up a couple of good ships to take out the enemies and give me some more sorely-needed resources. The game still ended up relatively close and was great fun. Now that I have more familiarity with the rules and gameplay, it will be easier to streamline teaching this one to new players. Great game!
7 Wonders We got in a couple of four player games trying out the new "Catan" Wonder. In the first game, I had Giza but got stymied for not being able to get papyrus to build what I needed. In the second, I took Babylon and combined its Wonder ability with two Science-friendly leaders to end up with 55 Science points and a winning total of 69.
Onexeno We finished up the night with a few games of the solitaire version. We were looking to beat the current best score of 70, but didn't do very well. Still a fun 5-minute game when you don't have much time.
Other games played today included: Colosseum, Star Trek Heroclix, Indonesia, and Chinatown...
