After my last post got so much attention I feel amazed that so many people took time to read it. After all, I'm nobody here. Just a shy Finnish girl who likes to play boardgames.

I think I'm going to write more about our gaming with my sister-in-law, once we get some new games to the table with her. I now feel very inspired to try all those games people suggested for us to play.

In the meanwhile, this is going to be one of those really boring post with nothing interesting in it. I'm sorry for that. modest

My fiancé and I had been sick for many weeks and we hadn't done much else than stayed at home. So when last weekend came, we decided to go to Helsinki to buy some new games. Well, actually we had decided to buy a game, but ended up with several in the shopping bag.

The weather was nice on Saturday. We took a train to Helsinki, since we live in Vantaa and there is no boardgame stores here. It doesn't matter, because the train trip is only 20 minutes long. First we went to Fantasiapelit, to buy A Touch of Evil: The Supernatural Game , which had been on our wishlist for quite some time. Well, actually it was on my wishlist, but because of my begging, my fiancé looked into it and got excited as well.

We also got Small World: Tunnels from there, even though they had this stupid rule that you had to buy some other SW stuff to get that. But I explained that we already had all the expansions to SW. The sales clerk was really nice and gave us Tunnels despite the rule.

Now that we were really happy with our purchase, we decided to go to another store. Just in case there was something fun.

So we went to see what Lautapelit.fi had on their shelves. We wandered through the shelves for a while and finally we saw the new re-print of Evo. We hadn't really discussed about getting it, but on a whim we took it. We also got Saboteur because Lautapelit.fi had just released the big box edition with the expansion in it. Should be fun with the right group of people. I also bought Piece o' Cake which I had been drooling over for such a long time. I just don't get it why I hadn't bought it earlier. It was only 20e. We actually have played it 4 times since and what a blast it has been.

Just before we went to the counter to pay, my fiancé spotted Fortune and Glory: The Cliffhanger Game on the top shelf. I had shown him a video of that game like a week ago and it had stuck in his mind. We started discussing whether we could splurge a bit and buy that also. F&G is 85e here. But then we looked at the box and realised how huge it is. Wouldn't be nice to carry it around town. So we ended up leaving it on the shelf but instead after we got home we ordered it online with free shipping. All and all not so bad.

After our shopping spree we went home and on the way a guy in the train spotted that we had a bag from Lautapelit.fi and asked if we were some kind of geeks Well, he said that in a good way. We ended up chatting a bit and it was quite nice. He was really interested in our games and he seemed astonished that such cool games existed. I hope it inspired him to go and buy some games for himself.

Now I have a lot of rulebooks to learn, so I guess I know how to spend all my free time. I hope you guys had a fun weekend too. I sure did

Ah blogger's stress - you've made it
A charming little post so don't worry.

A rule in order to buy a product seems crazy. Nice to see the front of house had the professionalism/ common sense to ignore the boss.

Sounds like a rather fun day out. Converting people on public transport is always an impressive feat. My FLGS is owned by a comic shop and so their bags are have 'comic world' or the like in huge writing, much to my chagrin.

I had to carry FANG across the my local city of Birmingham. Wait on the station for nearly an hour, then on to the train, through my hometown and finally to the carpark. Very heavy on the arms.

No one asked about the game, but I did get accosted by a few street canvassors, mostly charities. They got a long story of how I'd been out of work for 7 months and how after I'd paid off the outstanding bills out of my redundancy had enough left to buy this very large and heavy boardgame. For some reason they forgot about getting me to sign up to their product and were glad to see me go. Ah, works everytime. Sadly no new BGG members came from this encounter.

Nothing beats a nice trip out to buy new boardgames when you've been feeling down or ill.

EDITS: corrected my usual typos.

Liam,

converting people really is fun! And it does help that Lautapelit.fi has their logo printed on their bags.(Lautapelit means boardgames).

The rule about the SW Tunnels apparently was that you get it free if you buy other SW stuff. And that way only. I guess it helped that I batted my eyelashes and said please with a smile Well, I didn't really do that, but the clerk was really nice. After all we did buy some other stuff there.

Glad you enjoyed playing Piece o' Cake. Drooling over it is not recommended, however, as it's only made out of cardboard
I know what you mean, however, as the game always makes me hungry for coffee and cake.

It really is a lot of fun packed in a little box. You've made a fine game, thanks for that! Now all I have to do is track down Das Joker-stücke

Mirra, Finnland has a fairly large presence here on BGG, a good portion of my blog readers are from there, and several Finnish designers are now publishing outside the country. Have board games always been so popular there, or is this a recent trend?

I think people have always liked games here but gaming certainly has grown a lot. My family has always been into boardgames but some of my friends and their families have only recently gotten into gaming. I guess Finnish game designers are making a huge effort these days to get their games noticed. A lot more than before.
