Teuber Brings Catan to Cards Once Again

In 2010, designer Klaus Teuber overhauled the two-player Catan card game with the release of The Rivals for Catan – released in Germany as Die Fürsten von Catan – and in 2011 Teuber and Mayfair Games present a new multi-player card game set in the Catan universe: The Struggle for Catan.

As in the original The Settlers of Catan board game, players need to manage their resources in order to build settlements, roads, cities, city improvements and knights, all of which grant victory points or special abilities. Control of roads and knights can change hands during the game, so don't assume that what's yours will stay yours. City improvements are expensive, but they bring you additional VPs and other bonuses, so strive to spiff up your cities! The first player to have ten VPs wins the game.

The Struggle for Catan is for 2-4 players, ages 10 and up, with a playing time of 45-60 minutes and a $15 price tag. The game is scheduled for a May 19, 2011 release from Mayfair Games.

Interesting.
Isn't that the identical box cover/image as the current Settlers edition though? That could cause some confusion...

The idea of a "Catan universe" makes me giggle a little. That's kind of like referring to the "checkers universe" or the "hopscotch universe."

I dislike The Settlers of Catan.

I enjoy The Rivals for Catan.

Thus, I'm unsure of what to think of The Struggle for Catan.

One could say you are "struggling" to figure out its place in the universe.

@Ryan: yes. Struggle... is a multiplayer card game using a very different mechanic. The expansions for Rivals... are separate and continue to be 2-player.

I hope that helps!

.... I don't know, Settlers Of Catan was already a struggle for me and a handful of others. However, I wouldn't mind giving this a try if someone else has it.

$15 price tag looks attractive, as well as the 45 - 60 min playtime. Add the customary extra 30 min to games of this level of complexity for slower groups and/or learning games, and it's still sounds pleasant.

YAWN!! I appreciate Catan. I appreciate even more the "spin-offs" which attempted to do something NEW(ish) in the realm of Catan. (Candamir, Elasund...) Now granted, I haven't played EVERY Catan spin-off, but can't we have something besides a dozen different ways to build settlements, roads, cities, city improvements and knights and to control roads??

Shouldn't these cities and settlements be complete already?? Do building these things really represent a struggle?

Why not represent Dukes of Catan? Sitting in your established Duchies, struggling to rest power from the neighboring Dukes. Use intrigue, trade, and military power to bring them down! You'd still need to gather and effectively use your "resources" to do so.

Let everyone start with 10 victory points, but then you can only get more points by stealing them from your opponents! First one to 18 - 20 VPs wins. A true power STRUGGLE!

Sorry. Rant over.

I love most of the Catan games and spin-offs. (even the oft neglected Anno 1503) The SoC Card Game is a favorite. But another card game... but multi-player... when I can play the board game...

maybe worthwhile... but it will take some convincing...

Wake me when he designs The Collapse of Catan, the sheep-stacking dexterity game. unless I do first!

Heh, heh! Now that would be a good spin-off! Sheriff Cooter chasing the General Lee down the longest road of Catan.

I am a fan of card games, with their minimalist game equipment and easy-to-handle nature, so card game adaptations of board games that I already like are perfectly fine in my book.

Hmmm, 2-4 players? That's unique. Looking at my games collection, I've quite pointedly noticed that most games can either handle only 2 players, or don't work with less than 3 players.

Well, to be fair, there are plenty of games that work with 2-4 players. But it's rare to find GOOD ones that do.

I'm still wondering why my local store doesn't carry Rivals for Catan, but while I'm out there tomorrow I'll look for both of these Catan games, and probably buy just one of them.

Personally, I think it's a lot like referring to a "France universe" or a "Hawaii universe." After all, Catan is an island, dangit, albeit fictional.

I really liked the way resources were handled in Settlers of America. As you expand into the West you can leave your opponents high and dry in the East.

I'm assuming that this will be the English language version of Kosmos' Die Siedler von Catan: Das schnelle Kartenspiel, which is due out in February. Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot of information available yet for that title either.

Yes, I am kidding. That's what the smiley face was for.

Look, all I'm saying is that when somebody refers to a "universe," in my mind that implies an entire fictional world full of diverse landscapes, locales, characters, stories, and plot lines. There's a certain grandness to it. It has its own history and culture. Examples that spring to mind are things like the Lord of the Rings universe, the Marvel universe, or the Star Wars universe.

Settlers of Catan is a board game, and a pretty abstract one at that. The only character is the robber, and he's not exactly rife with introspection and character development. No one has ever had an epic swashbuckling adventure across the island of Catan. The citizens of Catan never gather around campfires and regale each other with tales about that time Keith traded three sheep for a brick.

To be fair, there have been a few novels and/or short stories published that give Catan some sort of continuity. The new Rivals of Catan card game makes reference to the "history" they present.

But still, you're right that the word "universe" is a stretch. "World" would still be a bit of a stretch. Catan is supposed to be based on a real world setting, and I think they've even gone so far as to approximate where it lies in physical proximity to specific European countries. Fictionally, of course.

BGG's term "game family" is a pretty handy one for grouping the Catan games, but the term doesn't incorporate the fiction that's been released under the Catan brand.

Actually, as far as I can tell, The Starfarers of Catan is probably more deserving of the term "Catan universe," for obvious reasons......
