March 1st

To start off the evening, Timm and Kevin arrived and we weren't expecting Jeff for about an hour so we broke out our ongoing Schafkopf game. I extended my lead from +13 to +19 after about six hands or so. I don't think I was set, actually I don't think anyone was set after they picked. Most of the hands were fights to the finish as everyone also got schneider, as well. I'm going to plan a Schafkopf night in the near future. I'm itchin' to play some five handed and play for an extended time.

Jeff arrived earlier than normal, so we aborted our teaching of Carolus Magnus to Kevin. It's a great game and I really dig it with two. It would have been our first time playing with three. Another time, I imagine.

Well, previous to Jeff arriving, we had decided on breaking out Shogun. None of us had played it but I had read through the rules numerous times. It's Henn and it's a Queen game, plus the ratings means it has got to be good. Well, it was. It took us about a half hour to set up the game and go through the rules. Strategy? Naaaah. None of us really had a clue on strategy going in. But, as we played things became clear. This game was easy enough to learn how to play the mechanics, it really picked up speed as we went along, but man, there is a ton going on. A very dynamic game. You have to manage battles, money, rice. Oooh, we messed up rice in the first year not realizing we had to have one for each province, as well as, subtracting the action card (with was -5). We all lost one revolt after the first year. The same mistake wasn't made the second year. In the end, a key takeover by Kevin which net him three buildings decided the game. Kevin ended up with 54, I had 45, Timm had 38 and Jeff had 32. We all agreed we have to play this "Sooner than Later". I liked this one, a lot, as I think about it. The cube tower was also very cool, as well (this worked in Kevin's favor later in the game, as well).

Well, considering we learned the rules from scratch, we only botched a couple. First, and a biggie, was we did not clear the revolts after the first winter. It made sense to us not to as we really had to manage our hand on when and where we could collect taxes and rice.

Not really sure how I missed it, that was clearly in the book.

Another one was farmers being casualities first in a battle with someone (if you had no revolts). Not sure how many times that came up but I'm pretty certain it did a couple of times.

Looking forward to playign this one again.
