Gripping Beast's Dark Ages miniatures skirmish. Each side has between 25 ato 73 miniatures, organised into groups of 4-12 figures. Miniatures are classed as Hearthguard, Warriors, or Levy, and an army comprises of 4 or 6 points of units (1 point = 4 Hearthguard, 8 Warriors, or 12 Levy figures).
Each faction - Anglo-Danish, Viking, Welsh, Norman - has its own battleboard of command options, which are selected depending on the roll of your Saga Dice. Saga Dice have special icons and give your command choices for the turn.
Combat and shooting are simple and based on six-sided dice rolls, the real challenge is to use the options from your battleboard as effectively as possible. The core game comes with a battleboard for the four main factions, with future battleboard releases intended to cover other armies/factions.
The first supplement for the game, entitled 'Northern Fury' was released in Spring 2012. It is 22 pages, and contains details and rules for four more factions (Anglo-Saxons, Bretons, Jomsvikings and Scots), one scenario and four separate Battle Boards.
The second supplement, The Raven's Shadow, also released in 2012, is 28 pages long and adds four new factions (Franks, Irish, Norse-Gael and Strathclyde Welsh) with their respective cardstock Battle Boards.
the third supplement, Varjazi and Basileus, was released in 2013. It is 12 pages long, includes three new factions (Pagan Rus, Era of the Princes Rus, and Byzantines) with their respective Battle Boards, and a cardboard folder to organize all your rulebooks, supplements and Battle Boards.
A printable four-page SAGA Reference Guide including setup, gameplay, factions, special units, and special models. This does not replace the need to purchase the rulebooks, but it will make it easier for players to review and look up game rules during gameplay.
My plan is to have a v1.0 release of this SAGA Reference Guide uploaded by 4 January 2015.
Version 0.8, 28 December 2014: Fixed a typo in the Warband Size section, added URL to download the Steppe Tribes faction rules from Studio Tomahawk, added URL to download SAGA files from Studio Tomahawk, clarified Unit rules for special models, standardized on the term ‘model’ instead of ‘figure’, added game tip about being allowed to measure distances at any time, updated Order Phase info to accommodate the layout...
This is a simple teaching scenario for Saga. The more experienced player is still an active player, but the main goal is to coach the new player and guide the new player through the basics of the game and the intricacies of the Battle Boards.
This scenario can also be played by two experienced Saga players, but they should use the "Competitive Play" victory conditions as described in the scenario.
Random Saga Battles (RSB) is semi-controlled random battle generator to introduce some mystery, anticipation, excitement, and of course a little fog of war to your SAGA games. Version 3.0 is the final revision of RSB, and has several refinements, changes, and improvements over previous versions as well as some bonus scenarios.
This is the exact same quick reference sheet that can be found on page 75 of the rule book, but instead of having to refer to that page all the time, you can just print this PDF file and use it during your games of SAGA.
The actual dice are $20 which is pretty steep. The more pressing problem is they are constantly out of stock and have had major supply issues. Make your own from these files. I suggest using 3/4 inch wooden blocks from Hobby Lobby and not Michaels. The blocks from Hobby Lobby (blue bag) are much better refined and of a better quality.
