Description Edit | History

From the designer (about his Commands and Colors system, C&C: Ancients, and Memoir' 44):

"Commands & Colors: Ancients depicts warfare from the Dawn of Military History (3000 BC) to the opening of the Middle Ages (400 AD). Quite an ambitious undertaking for one game, yet Commands & Colors by design is a unique historical game system which allows players to effectively portray stylized battles from this time in history. The 15 battles, showcased in the scenario booklet, although stylized, focus on important terrain features and the historical deployment of forces in scale with the game system. The battles include Bagradas, Cannae, and Zama."

"The scale of the game fluctuates from battle to battle. For some scenarios, an infantry unit may represent a legion of fighters, while in other scenarios a unit may represent just a few brave warriors. But the tactics you need to execute conform remarkably well to the advantages and limitations inherent to the various units, their weapons, terrain and time."

"Unlike its older brother, Battle Cry by Avalon Hill (Hasbro), Commands & Colors: Ancients is moderately more complex and contains additional historical details without the battlefield clutter. Most scenarios will still play to a conclusion in less than an hour."

"The command card system, drives movement, creates a true fog of war and presents both challenges and opportunities. There are four types of command cards: Leadership cards, Section cards, Troop cards and Tactic cards."

"The battle dice system resolves all combat efficiently and quickly. Each battle die has one Light, one Medium, one Heavy, one Leader, one Flag and one Swords symbol."

"The game mechanics, although simple, will still require strategic card play, historical tactics, timely dice rolling, and an aggressive yet flexible battle plan, to achieve victory."

4 Block Color & Victory Banner Chart
Chart showing which victory banners correlate to which block colors (from the rulebooks). For those that want to use the victory banner blocks but don't always remember which set goes with which army, this simple chart lines up victory banner labels that are associated with a certain block color. The information is spread out amongst the various rulebooks and not completely included in the online living rules, so here it is in one place. 3 Block organiser illustrated inlay for Plano 3600 box
I've been asked to upload the files that I created for my own C&C:A boxes - here they are as a single four-page .pdf file. Inlays are included for Roman, Carthaginian, Greek & Eastern blocks. Print out at 100% (the files are scaled for 300dpi printers) and cut to the outside edge of the thick black lines. These four pages are - since they're copies of the ones I use on my boxes - designed for use with the main game plus the first expansion, thus if you do not have the Greek/Eastern expansion, you may want to simply put the dice in a bag down the side of the game box since. Where cutting the inner walls of the boxes were necessary to make spaces for the cards and the terrain hexes, I used a craft knife and scalpel with strong blades. Exercise caution and patience when doing this since the box is made of strong plastic; score away gradually rather than try to cut through in one go. In use, it should look like this: http://boardgamegeek.com/image/421099

7 Commands and Colors Ancients Dice Result Summary
The basic combat for Commands and Colors Ancients is very simple. But there are many exceptions to the standard combat results which can trip up both novices and veterans. This table attempts to summarize all the conditions (attacker, defender, and terrain) that can modify C&CA die results.

11 MINI-BLOCKS: mini-LABELS (2 armies) plus mini-BOARDS (normal+Epic)
And these are the terrain tiles! I have reduced the scan of the tiles to a bit less than 3cm wide, putting the 8 sheets together in only 2 pages. I have filled the 8 empty hex spaces between them with water tiles. For details see the MINI-BLOCKS thread. [Posted with permission from GMT]

10 Counter version of CCA (6 armies + Sparta)
This is a counter version of the 6 CCA armies (plus Sparta, or Greek#2) I made with all the unit statistics around the unit picture. Print on label paper, stick on thick cardboard, and cut! You can cut dummy cardboard pieces to place below the unit counter, in order to track the number of blocks (which you will remove every time the unit loses a "block"). I have included a second counter for units that change their statistics after first loss (W and BCH).

20 CC:A enhanced sticker graphics
You don't necesarily need miniatures to improve the aesthetics of the game. Within this file you have all the stickers from the base game and replacements with redone graphics. Just print 2 copies of each page on A4 adhesive glosy paper, cut and stick. Enjoy as much as you did the first time!
