Description Edit | History

This is the Indian sub-continent (British Imperial India) member of the 18xx family of games. It is billed as A game for engineers who've had enough of the financiers! It involves five-foot-six and metre gauges, hills, mountains and the Himalayas, contract bids and government mails. The technical challenges of building a railroad network in difficult country stand on a par with the financial market manipulation which usually dominates the 18xx games.

Time to play is listed as 4-7 hours. Ages 11+. A 4-hour game would be an exception and it's not really for 11-year-olds.

Two small extension kits were produced in 1992 and re-edited in 1999.

For its 20th anniversary, Lookout Games and Mayfair Games Inc. published an updated version in Oct 2009. It is based on the retuned rules by Stuart Dagger and Steve Jones that were edited by Lou Jerkich, Dick Ruck and Jeff Heuer.

It should be noted that the 2009 edition of the game, although similar to the original, is different in that the board is smaller [does not include the Assam area east of Calcutta], has some different tiles and has a new 8th company, the EAST COAST RAILWAY [replacing the BENGAL ASSAM RAILWAY] which starts at an uprated Waltair hexagon. And of course the rules have been changed somewhat.

3 1853 Replacement Tokens v1
A replacement set of tokens for all versions of 1853. It is designed to be printed to an A4 sheet of 13mm round labels. These should nicely fit the wooden tokens found in 1853 v2. You will need a few more of these to make a set suitable for both versions. There is an extra token for a stock marker if used for 1853 v1. I have not made a label for the cubic stock marker from v2 Please note the following I have tried to align the tokens to the label guide as best I can but the registration accuracy of most home printers is so variable you will find some will be off-centre. The roundels are deliberately oversized to give some tolerance. If all else fails -print to an A4 label and punch. As the final articles are rather small I have not been too fussy over centring text or logo’s...

Print in landscape. The left side is used to prepare the bid. When it is filled out, copy the bid to the top and to the right side of the page. Fold the page over to hide the cities when the bid is displayed. During the choosing of cities, mark down each one on the right-hand side and subtract its value.
