Description Edit | History

At Nürnberg 2006, Winning Moves Germany demonstrated a prototype of this area control game. In Terra Nova, players try to claim areas of land by moving control markers and placing fences. Each turn, a player must take three actions, first moving a control marker, then taking two further actions from these possibilities:

  1. moving a control marker (whether the same one or a different one) and/or
  2. placing a fence next to a control marker that moved this turn.

Areas are scored once they're enclosed and contain no more than three types of landscape. Whoever has the majority of pieces in an area scores points based on the number of spaces and the number of types of landscape in the area, with fewer types scoring more points. Points are split in case of a tie. The game ends once all areas have been scored.

Winner of Premio Archimede 2004.

FAQ:

Q: What's the story on differing versions of how the game ends?
A: See this thread: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/2180502
Basically it happens if one player runs out of meeples, or if all but one player have to pass one after the other in a row due to being unable to move their blocked meeples.

Q: Can you Move, Place, Move?
A: Yes. MMM, MMP, MPM, MPP are all fine. But you cannot move a meeple back to the place they started this turn.

Q: If an "island" in a territory is covered by a stone, is it counted as part of the score?
A: Of course not; covered spaces don't add points.

Q: Is scoring really "immediate"?
A: Yes, as soon as a stone is placed forming a territory. Not at the end of your turn.

8 Updated Terra Nova Rules
Thanks to a few sharp eyed BGGer's, these updated rules correctly list the games THREE (3) end conditions. The original only listed two.
