Description Edit | History

Alfa-Kubes comprises six dice with letters on each face; each letter has a value - as in 'scrabble'. The aim is to create the highest value word over 3 throws, keeping the dice you want and re-throwing the rest - as in Yahtzee or poker dice.

Simple, but infectious.

(Dating note: The box and rules are not dated. However, the place of manufacture is Harborne, England, where Chad Valley shifted production in 1920. Their Royal Charter mark, granted in 1936, is not printed on the box, so this edition of Alfa-Kubes must have been created between these dates. Hence this submission of 'c.1928')

Alfa-Kubes is a word dice game.

RULES FOR “ALFA-KUBES.”
1. Any number of players can take part.
2. The object of the game is to make a word with as large an aggregate of pips upon the respective letters as possible.
3. Each player takes the six dice and throws them. He can leave as many dice on the table as he wishes. If he leaves two then he picks up the remaining four and throws them. If three, then with the remaining three, and so on. He can then again leave as many of these letters as he likes and pick up the remaining die or dice and throws them.
4. In all he has three throws.
5. The value of the word is calculated by the dice markings in the corners of the letters.
6. It does not follow that a six letter word will alwaya make the highest score. The game is of three rounds so that each player in all has nine throws. (Three turns each of three throws).
Example :
First throw : B. L. R. T. Y. N. The player keeps B and L, and throws the remaining four.
Second throw; B, L. (kept) R W.N.O. The word now reads BLOWN, and he throws the remaining die and gets an I (useless). Total score 23 for the first word.
7. A great amount of skill is necessary to judge the value of the dice left to draw to, their word forming values and their numerical values. Two dice such as a D and an A, totalling as they do 11, are worth drawing to, as the possibilities of the remaining throws are good.
