Description Edit | History

From Battleline, the original publisher:

"The grandeur and decadence of ancient Rome in your living room! Thrill to the dust of chariot races, or the skillful bloodshed of gladiatorial combat. Circus Maximus is really TWO games in one. In the Chariot Race game you pick your team of horses, driver, and chariot car, each of which have special characteristics . . . In Gladiator, you pick up your weapons and step onto the bloodstained sands, simultaneously maneuvering, striking, and waiting for that fatal step that puts you inside your opponent's guard."

Battleline's Circus Maximus would later be developed by Don Greenwood and published in 1980 by Avalon Hill as separate titles: Circus Maximus and Gladiator.

Violent and bloody, Circus Maximus details the chariot races that occurred in ancient Rome. Eight teams race around the track three times to determine victory. Players prepare for the race by selecting the composition of their team of horses, their rider's skills, and the type of chariot that will be driven. Once the race begins the players are free to do as they wish to hamper the other racers including whipping the rider, ramming chariots with scythed wheels, smashing into horses, and running over crashed opponents. A campaign game of multiple races, in which players have to manage their teams and can increase their income by betting on races, is also possible.

Circus Maximus (1980)
Previous design (Battleline) redesigned by Avalon Hill
Designed by Michael Matheny
Development by Don Greenwood

An excellent multi-player game combining the unique racing features of SC and W,P,&S with the combat of a wargame. Considerably improved over the BL version. Packaged in the gamete style box and competitively priced at $8. Perhaps the forerunner of things to come.

8 Reusable Race Log
Full-page player sheets for Circus Maximus, designed to be attached to a cork board — with pushpins used for tracking all the stats. Useful and reusable (especially if you're tired of constantly photocoping sheets, or wiping wax pencil off of acetate covers.)

6 Race Steward Sheets
Running so many games at conventions, I found it handy to have race steward sheets, both to keep track of all the player's stats and for a record of the race. Here are two I used: the first with 16 slots (two of each color except for brown and pink), and the second with all 10 factions (with Steel swapped in for Pink.) The 2nd one is also designed to attach to cork board and use pushpins for markers.

19 Streamlined Circus Maximus
For over 20 years I've been running large chariot races using Avalon Hill's Circus Maximus and 15mm miniatures in an 8-foot long scale hippodrome. Over time, I've streamlined some of the old AH rules to speed up play for large groups. Here are my collected changes to the game in one 2-page document.
