Global Chess (1997)

Using a combination of two linked and spinnable concentric-checkered boards, Global Chess simulates the way chess would be played if its board were wrapped around a sphere, with rows defined by latitude lines and columns defined by longitude. Players begin with pieces clustered around their respective 'poles'. The rules of chess remain relatively unchanged, except where the nature of the board makes standard movement behave a little differently; the movement distances of bishops, rooks and queens are now theoretically infinite, and the movement of knights over the poles is a tad non-intuitive. Ultimately, Global Chess brings fresh thinking and strategies to classic chess.
