This is a solitaire story game - you read one numbered section after another. Each describes a new situation, or provides rules about the choices and actions you can make. There are plenty of events and situations, so each game will be a new, fresh experience.
The sections are divided into Events (E00 numbers), Adventures (A00 numbers), Enemies (V00 numbers) that describe the various enemies and aliens that oppose the Doctor, and a rules booklet (R00 numbers).
Doctor Who is an adventure game. You play the game in turns. A standard turn starts with you selecting an Action such as Exploring, Planning, Escaping Capture etc. Depending on the action selected, you will be referred to a chart where you roll two dice. The dice roll may then indicate an event section, which you then resolve. After each action you roll to see if you have an encounter.
Some events may lead to fighting, described in the combat rules. You may also have additional characters join you as Allies. These additional characters are especially useful in fights, although some may have knowledge or abilities useful in certain events. Some characters become trusted Companions.
Generally in an Adventure, you will try to defeat an Enemy. This is done by gaining Plot events to reveal the Enemy Goal and then choosing to Defeat them as an Action in a final showdown!
Beware however - if you do not Defeat the Enemy by a time limit, they will have completed their deadly plan and beaten you!
