From the back of the package:

Gather your players and face off for gridiron glory!
Third and Long recreates the action of a pro football game. Two coaches take turns on offense and defense, calling plays and executing drives. Touchdowns, field goals, fumbles, interceptions, penalties, and big plays are all part of the exciting action. Join the fun as the teams of the Professional Football League compete for the Championship Trophy!

In Third and Long, two players take on the role of opposing coaches in a game of American Football.

Each coach chooses a team from the star players included in the game. Pre-made teams are provided for simplicity, or a draft with a salary cap can be held to form the teams. Teams do not have all 11 players represented, they simply comprise of the star players from the following skill positions: QB, RB, WR, LB, CB, S.

A coin flip determines who starts out on Offense and who will initially play defense. Players share two decks of play call cards. The coach on offense takes the Offensive Play Calls and the coach on defense takes the Defensive Play Calls.

Coaches choose their respective play calls in secret, revealing them at the same time. The interaction between the offensive and defensive play call determines the match up of star players involved in the play. Action Cards (which form each player's hand) are used to further influence the outcome of each play.

The game is made up of a series of drives. Each drive is made up of a randomly determined number of "Key Moments" (from 1 to 5). Key Moments and represent those special times during a football game that mean the difference between success and failure. For each Key Moment, a play occurs. If the offense is able to win that number of plays in a row, they score.

If the defense is able to stop the offense on any of the Key Moments in a given drive, then a fourth down has occurred. Most of the time a punt will follow, but sometimes the coach on offense is desperate and will attempt to go for it.

Each game results in real football game-like scores, and uses nothing but cards (no extra components to keep track of field position or time on the clock). Interceptions, fumbles, big plays, injuries, field goals, touchdowns, safeties, extra points... its all in there!

More Information Edit | History

Third and Long: The Football Card Game (IPG0001) was the first game designed by Brent Evanger for IPG. Bringing the game into production was, in fact, the reason for the formation of the company Interaction Point Games, LLC.

The current game "Third and Long" took shape in November of 2008 and IPG was formed in February of 2009.

The idea to create a pro football card game of some kind was the product of many years of daydreaming (a decade plus) between a couple of people, including Evanger, Mark Sommers, Travis Bullinger, and Nathan Ahlstrom.

Numerous problems with the proposed game mechanics and record keeping schemes kept the game from ever becoming fully playable until the fall of 2008.

Travis Bullinger is credited with coming up with the game's name: much better than the previous working title of "Pro Football: The Card Game".

3 Third and Long Scoring, Quarter, Timeout, Challenge Tracker
edit - I have a version 1.1 that fits this all onto 1 page. I'm going to test it out for a bit to see how well it works then post it up here if there's interest. It's the same basic idea but moves the Timeouts and Challenges into the blank space under "Home" and "Away" on the scoring track. This is a 2-page PDF of a little thing I made in Excel to keep track of scoring, quarters, timeouts and coaches' challenges in Third and Long. I found it handy so thought I'd post it in case others did as well. If you cut along the dotted lines, give one Timeout / Challenge strip to each coach. The Quarter and Scoring tracker somewhere easily seen by both people. This folds in half and fits nicely in the original tuck box (the scoring track folds in half twice). I use little black and white glass...

8 Third and Long Drive Track
Greetings Football Fans! Printout this Third and Long Drive track to track your Drives to Paydirt! You can cutout or insert into page protector or even laminate if you want. Use any coin/token to track your drive scoring (plus Offensive Cards and minus any Defensive Cards) to show the current play number. If after all cards have been played and the number is = or greater than one (1); then the play is successful (First Down / or Score) and the drive continues or a score was made. I also included a DRIVE tracker to maintain the number of drives remaining this drive. I hope you enjoy as I do this game! Thumbs would be greatly appreciated for those who found this file useful.
