Description Edit | History

Included with JagdPanther magazine #13 - (aka Battlefield magazine), this game is concerned with the efforts of Army Group North during the initial Wehrmacht assault into Russia, 1941 and subsequent operations into 1944.

The components consist of the following:
a (3)-COLOR paper Map sheet 16-1/2" by 27-1/2";
3)-Full pages RULES (these should be removed from the magazine prior to play);
a sheet of die-cut Cardboard Counters (144) 16 rows X 9

Players will have to provide their OWN 6-sided DIE in order to play.

The area encompassed by the Map sheet covers the Baltic coast up to Leningrad & past-including part of Lake Ladoga, North to past Tikhvin, over to past Demyansk, & South to past Ostrov & Tartu. The Map sheet is overall Light YELLOW and the Colors used are BLUE (Water features, Swamp, German Reinforcement Hexes, Town/City/Lakes-name lettering); RED (Forts, Kronstadt Naval Base, Start lines, Soviet Reinforcement Hexes, Turn Numbers, Rivers & Game name lettering); & BROWN (RAIL lines, Town/City hex, Combat Results Table print). Game counters are WHITE print on RED for Soviet Units, while the Germans have WHITE print on BLACK for SS units & BLACK print on Light GRAY for Wehrmacht units. The game scale given is: 10.5 Km across a hex, Regiment/Division/Corps level but NO Historical designations, for Units, and each turn equals 10 Days.

The RULES have Special provisions for: Railroads; Engineers (Soviets ONLY); Weather effects(WINTER:Frozen Lakes/Rivers hexes); Airpower (German Airstrikes ONLY); Artillery (Ranged-Soviets ONLY); Supply Units (Germans ONLY)& Supplying Leningrad. The Terrain Effects Chart and Combat Results Explanations are on the LAST page of the RULES.

There are (5)-Scenarios:

  1. 1. Breakthrough on the Luga Front-8-Turns-1 July~17 Sept.,1941;
  2. 2. Battle in Northern Russia-9-Turns-18 Sept.~5 Dec.,1941;
  3. 3. The Seige of Demyansk-10-Turns-12 Jan.~22 April,1942;
  4. 4. The 2nd Battle of Lake Ladoga-8-Turns-28 Nov.,1942~26 Feb., 1943; &
  5. 5. The Destruction of Army Group North-12-Turns-29 Nov.,1943~27 March, 1944.

Sequence of play is as follows: Germans begin first, 1.Reinforcement Phase; 2.Supply Determination Phase; 3.Movement Phase; 4.Combat Supply Determination Phase; 5.Combat Phase; 6.Mechanized Movement Phase; followed by the Soviet Player performing these same phases. NOTE:In some of the Later Scenarios, the Germans have to "skip" their entire FIRST turn, thereby allowing the Soviets to Start the game.

There is great detail on the Mapsheet including the area which will form the Demyansk Pocket with Surrounded German Units inside. Leningrad is massive with Forts indicated for it's defense and Supply is of consequence as any Units in the City will have to account for this with a Level to keep track of.
