The Alexander Mosaic is a piece of artwork from around 100 BC. The mosaic is originally from the House of the Faun in Pompeii. It illustrates a battle between the armies of Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. The mosaic has been measured to be 19 feet by over 10 feet.
The mosaic is thought to be a copy of a painting by Apelles, a contemporary of Alexander himself, or a copy of a lost late fourth century BC fresco by the painter Philoxenos of Eretria. The mosaic depicts Darius fleeing in a chariot and the long spears which were a feature of the Macedonian phalanx.
The mosaic has been used as artwork for various games involving Alexander the Great.
