Jean Baptiste Édouard Detaille (October 5, 1848 - December 23, 1912) was a French artist known as a military artist.
He was a student of artist Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier. He served in the French Army during the Franco-Prussian War where he became an official painter of battles. He is also known for his paintings of the Napoleonic Wars.
A portion of his 1891 oil painting Vive L'Empereur charge du quatrième hussards à la bataille de Friedland, 14 juin 1807 also known in English as Charge of the 4th Hussars at the battle of Friedland, 14 June 1807 was used as the cover artwork for the game Manoeuvre while a portion of his painting Prussian Cuirassiers Attack a French Provision Train was used as the cover artwork for the games The Sedan Campaign, 1870 and Blood and Iron.
