John Gast (December 21, 1842 - ?) was a Berlin-born artist who worked as a painter and lithographer. He lived most of his life in Brooklyn, New York, and is most famous for painting American Progress, an allegory of Manifest Destiny that was widely disseminated in engravings and chromolithographic prints. Little is known about him other than this.
A portion of American Progress was used as cover artwork for the game Manifest Destiny.
Note: This is not the same person as John Gast (1772-1837), a shipwright and early trade unionist from southeastern London.
This artist is one of the Famous (non-game) Artists on the Geek.
