Jean-René Vernes is a game designer who in the 1950s devised the "Law of Total Tricks" (abbreviated as LoTT) for contract bridge as a guideline to be used to help determine how high to bid in a competitive auction. This rule of thumb was first described in English in a 1969 magazine article.
