Description Edit | History

James Cooke Brown (July 21, 1921 - February 13, 2000) was a sociologist and science fiction author. He is noted for creating the artificial language Loglan and for designing the Parker Brothers board game Careers.

He passed away in a hospital in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, halfway through a cruise round South America.

1. He designed the game Careers, and a re-design, expanding the
three original goals of Fame, Happiness and Money by adding Wisdom,
Power and one that I forget. For instance, the richest source of
Wisdom is "The Mountain-Top of the Hermit", and the richest source
of power is the NORAD command center (if you push the button to
launch the missiles).

The re-design was never published, but I had a chance to play a
prototype in the mid-1970's.

2. He published a Utopia novel (thinly disguised as science fiction)
entitled The Troika Incident. It influenced my political and
economic ideas.

3. He invented the synthetic language "Loglan". It's a fascinating
language; read about it on the web (search for both "Loglan" and
"Lojban"—there was a schism).
