Matt Calkins runs a software company called Appian. He has been the President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board since founding the company in 1999. Mr. Calkins also serves on the MicroStrategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) Board of Directors. He has a B.A. with honors in Economics from Dartmouth, and won that school's prize for top graduate in that field.

Events he has won at the World Boardgaming Championships include Acquire, Tigris & Euphrates, Titan: the Arena, Attila, and War of 1812.
