Just before Alan Moon's 1995 Gathering of Friends game convention, Pfiefer received 24 copies of the new game Die Siedler von Catan. He sold all of them within a day and later sold another 70 copies that year at Avaloncon. He folded his company R&D Games when he learned that Alan Moon was about to start a German game import business.
Contests that he has won at the World Boardgaming Championships include his victories for Hoity Toity (Adel Verpflichtet) in 1991, 1996, 1999, and 2005.
