Description Edit | History

User Summary:

This is the family for the Star Fleet Battles Game System. Star Fleet Battles is a science fiction wargame where players command starships and battle in a "future history".

The "premise" of the game (from the designer/publisher) was that a message from the future was received in the present day, and the game was based on the "future history" received in the time warp message. The game is based on the Star Trek Universe of the original TV series, and is based on an early license obtained from Paramount and Franz Joseph Designs. The license does not extend to later shows of the TV series, and mention of character names, etc. are absent from the game. As such, the Star Fleet Battles Universe diverged from the "official cannon" of the Star Trek Universe with its own unique stories, history, and races.

Players command starships using a Ship System Display (SSD) with the characteritics, weapons, and powers for each type of ship. Players start their turn by allocating energy to systems such as movement and/or weapons, and then play out each turn with manuever and combat resolution.

Star Fleet Battles was designed by Stephen V. Cole, who helped co-found the publisher, Task Force Games. Later, Stephen V. Cole established Amarillo Design Bureau as the design company, and Task Force Games published the game. When Task Force Games folded, Amarillo Design Bureau became the design company and publisher for all products in the Star Fleet Battles Universe Family.

Other games were created from the Star Fleet Battles Universe (Star Fleet Universe), including a strategic game (Federation & Empire), a card game (Star Fleet Battle Force), a RPG game (Prime Directive), and a simpler reimplentation of Star Fleet Battles (Federation Commander).
