Johnson Brothers started in c1820 printing and bookbinding. In 1897 the business moved to new premises in Harborne called the Chad Valley Works. In 1920 the company changed its name to The Chad Valley Company Ltd. In 1950 became the Chad Valley group. 1954 took over Roberts Bros of Gloucester. 1971 taken over by Barclay Securities and sold to Northrop Ltd in 1972. By 1980 merged with Palitoy and later dissolved in 1983. Kingfisher Group (Woolworths) bought the Chad Valley name for its own products.
The Chad Valley Company was in 1936 granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment - toymakers to H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
